Unknown Heroquest prototypes? Bryan Ansell's collection

Postby Citadel Collector » February 27th, 2014, 6:17 am

Hi all,

I have found some intriguing metal figures in Bryan Ansell’s collection and I need your help to pin down their identity. They were all in a ziplock bag with “Heroquest” written on it. Here they are:

http://s109.photobucket.com/upload?loca ... 0Heroquest

There is nothing written on the rear of the tabs (which is not unusual with prototypes) and the tab fronts have: “knight” “knight” “chaos warrior” “wizard” “barbarian” “dwarf” “elf”.

I’m not very familiar with Heroquest, having never played it, but these figures don’t seem to correspond to the Heroquest and Advanced Heroquest metal prototypes we know from the wiki and White Dwarf.

The character names and look of the figures are quite Heroquest-y in my opinion, but where do knights fit in to the game? Also that wizard with the hand on his staff – is there any HQ significance to that? I’m guessing he’s not an early Saruman..

Could they be HQ? Or metal prototypes for another game with plastic figures?

Cheers
Steve

The barbarian certainly resembles the HQ barbarian prototype.
The elf archer resembles the Advanced HQ Elf prototype.

Don't know about the rest.

The dwarf COULD be the dwarf in this illustration.

It IS confirmed that a hammerwielding dwarf WAS made for a never released quest pack.

Those are obviously different takes on the four Heroes (for anyone's reason). You should see about getting that Barb recast. I'd love to have one.

What about the two knights? Do knights ever feature in HQ or its add-ons?

Not really. There was mention of a Pierre Chancier, and there even was a picture of a knight in a WD magazine, nr 145 the eyes of chaos.
And there's Sir Ragnar, represented by a chaos sorcerer in the game.

I think you can still get that knight (in the link pictures, second last) through Perry Miniatures range - they kept the GW moulds and I suspect, he is still part of the set.

I definitely recognise the Barbarian from the boxed set photos - the Elf, I think you might find him on eBay, or something very very similar. Great collection all told :)
