I read all the books, LotR and Hobbit, loved them. I saw all the movies more times than I can remember (except Hobbit, saw that twice), and I like them too. Sure, vast liberties were taken, but it's a movie, it's entertainment, it's not an excersize on how to make a movie as true to the books as possible. I was entertained, mission succeeded. I like Tolkien a lot.

Seriously, I LOVE the NeverEnding Story.
Went to the cinema to see it back in 1984. Read the book then, and the last time I read it again was 3-4 years ago.

Let's take it even further: in 2005 I was Anthony Daniels' (C-3PO from Star Wars) personal assistant at a convention. At the same convention was Noah Hathaway (Atrejú in the NeverEnding Story). I had met him the month before in the UK (1-to get him to the other event and 2-I was the photographer at the interview he did there) and he's a great guy. We had lunch and talked about a zillion things. He's just 'one of the guys'.
A year later I met Alan Oppenheimer in the UK. He's Falkor. Well, the voice of Falkor.

That's Noah (right) and me (left)

And this is the pic Noah and Alan signed:

I just love the story, the movie.
It's easy to ridicule stuff. Why do it?

Don't get me wrong, but of course he's just one of the guys. He never did anything that's not "one of the guys'" territory.
He's not exactly Brad Pitt, and not even Wesley Snipes. he had a main role in a film. As a child.
The child that he was isn't the guy he's now so you can't and mustn't expect that he's not one of the guys.

Also, you can't give him - or anyone comparable in career - credit for being "one of the guys", cause he's just that. A normal person.

Four roles in 27 years does not make an actor.

Also, nobody ridiculed the story in any of the posts in this thread.

Go and tell this to some people I shall not name who had lesser careers than Noah (who quit acting because his real passion is bikes) and are total &*^%.
I have met dozens and dozens of actors the last 15 years. He is one of the most relaxed guys you'll find.

PS: He was the first Harry Potter in 1986...long before Rowling wrote a book about a character with the same name.

bold statement there. whilst i live in and around the midlands where a lot of tolkiens stuff was inspired and a massive fan of the books and the films as adaptations that they are. im not sure that is a fair enough statement other than your own personal opinion.

The novel is called the Hobbit, because its not about freakin' dwarves. Thorin Oakenshield is not a strong young man, he's a miserable old bastard who wasted his life. The point of the story was to contrast Bilbo with Thorin. If you missed that, read it again, but read it right.

i agree they were off the ball a little with some of the dwarves. and yes the book is called the hobbit. and is about a hobbit. and a wizard. and some dwarves. and a dragon and middle earth. as it is in the book and as it is in the movie. i cant watch a movie and compare to the books or i would never enjoy anything. just enjoy them for what they are instead of worrying about it. life is too short for that sorta thing

Peter Jackson wants money. The Hobbit movie is a freakin' sham, and if you spend money to see it, you're part of the problem of anti-intellectualism in the world today. The Hobbit movie is going to do just like the shitty LotR adaptations did and supplant Tolkien's vision of what he wanted. Peter Jackson is human scum and needs to go away.
