I just do not like Descent

Postby chaoticprime » June 23rd, 2013, 10:52 pm

I practically crapped my pants the first time I saw it at the store. I had to lie to my loved ones when I bought it; coercing my friends into claiming they bought it for me as an early birthday present. I played two games of it, shelved it for a year, and then sold its ass on ebay.

I think its want to be an analog video game did it in for me. Too many little things to keep track of. I use pips for BP and Gold in Heroquest, but those two are it.

Never played Descent, but I'm totally into Super Dungeon Explore these days. That game is da bomb!
It very much want's to be a video game though, but it really works out well.

Many HQ people will probably hate it because of the chibi style miniatures though... :D

I have everything SDE has out, and have built a dozen or so custom boards for it out of Hirst Arts stuff. However, I'm not sure I even quite understand how to play it, as the rules are very poorly written out.

I agree with you about Descent for the most part. It's so fiddly keeping track of things, and the constant spawning...ugh! I would like to try Descent second edition, however. It's still a race rather than a dungeon crawl, but players say a lot of the drag has been removed.

I was (...) close to buying 2nd Edition, but I came across an expansion for it that used tokens instead of miniatures. Not for my money.

THIS we can agree on. However the updated rulebook, FAQ and forums helps bring it a little more together.

also pictures of your custom boards please :)

When my wife gets home tonight, I'll have her photograph them. They're pretty badass. I emphasized wabi-sabi when making them--I used a lot of miscast tiles that stood at uneven height and such. I also sort of "got it painted." I based it all black, sponge-brushed on a base color, and then sponge-brushed on a highlight. In some rooms, like the slime/spit pits, I used glossy finish effects. I sealed the whole deal with white glue-in-water.

I'm looking for someone that has played the second edition. I love the tiles, miniatures, etc and I'm seriously considering purchasing it. Any information would be appreciated.
