mmm hard thing to make a replacement of this boardgame...
The original boardgame contains 3 squads of 5 space marines each : the blood angels, ultramarines & imperial fists.
As you may know, each squad chief's has the choice between 3 weapons but if you go to Games Workshop you will be forced to buy a figurine without the possiblity to change the weapon since you have to glue it !
In the same way of thinking, the 4 space marines of each squad :
1 space marine is forced to get a heavy weapon, another a light weap (the bolter)
So it means the 2 others have the choice too between heavy or light weaps !!
Just ty to calculate the price of all those minis : beyond limits !
+ all monster figurines ... !!!!
I suggest you to save money and to buy one, you can find boxes around 60 80€ now.
I even don't talk about expansions ...

Glue the weapon? Why do that when you can just stick it on with Sticky tack/poster tak/blu-tak/poster putty ?

A lot of 40K players have taken to magnets for swapping weapons due to the absurd WYSIWYG restrictions that tournaments and some other players have. I've done it on a couple of command models, swapping power fist with chainsword. Swapping out an arm with a different weapon is fairly easy, and make for interesting posing possibilities for some models.

Reaper Bones has a lot of miniatures that could probably work as analogs or variants. Lots of big mech (Dreadnought, I learned about from space crusade) type of figures, also some Terminator types that could pass as Necron/Androids. Lots of space pirate and other creatures that might pass as aliens.
I see the lore is pretty confusing, as stuff changes over time. Gene Stealers and Tyrannids aren't necessarily the same thing always and Necrons were developed more after the design we see in Space Crusade. When seeking stuff to put in I'd look first at what the 40K stuff looked like circa 1990.
I guess if you're making your own figures it doesn't matter as long as it looks good to you and fits in your budget. I grab stuff from Reaper all the time and use it for stuff that it wasn't necessarily designed to be, in my quests.
I see they did have "Space Dwarfs" in 40K, known as "squats" but they're rare and expensive (much like WHF fimirs, well maybe not THAT rare and expensive) sadly... of course I'm sticking with plastic, rather than metal.
