Basically i've been making models for other companies for the last few years and just not releasing anything for our own ranges. It's got the point where im a bit fed up on working on other people's projects. It's not inspiring for me to work on other's visions, compared to something i have come up with myself. It's also very bad margins selling to trade customers and it's putting my business at risk after focusing on this for so long. Now i figured i better get back to making some models and games which i actually care about and want to play myself, or just give up making miniatures and get an office job somewhere!
Recently I have started work on developing a fantasy boardgame, it's going to be an arena skirmish game involving mages and wizards fighting each other to hone their skills, blow off some steam and prove who is the best battlemage. Essentially "Fight Club" but with fireballs!
I'm aiming for something which is quick to learn to play (like HQ!) with the classic 80s fantasy aesthetic (like HQ!) and also fun enough to pick up again and again when you have 45 minutes to blast your friends and family with lighting and prove who is the best spellslinger!
I know the boardgame market is saturated and competitive nowadays, so perhaps I should have started this project back in 2014 when we started this journey. But I hope people like what we come up with enough that some others will play it
I'm making a development diary here for a few reasons:
1. To keep me accountable! I need kicking to devote enough time to develop this. It's a slow burn project and some weeks when there are bills to pay, i focus on some quick projects for another company and drop this sort of stuff. So please do kick me haha
2. Share what we are making with you all. Over the years I've really appreciated the feedback and input on our models from Ye Olde Inn members. I hope i can hear what you all think about this new project too.
3. To see if anyone with more experience than I would weigh in on the rules aspect. While ive been making models for over a decade, making rules for games is still quite new to me. So any feedback on balance or development is also welcomed.

Minis:
At the moment the minis are in the concept stage, Im aiming for 4 characters for the core boxed game. One of each of the elemental wizards. I made a brazier and i need to finish sculpting a pillar!
Im not quite happy with the concepts at the moment. Marcin the artist did a good job, but i think my breif is not quite in the direction of "classic fantasy" enough. Especially the air wizard...
Will keep working on art direction!
Conceps for Earth and Ice (water)

Concepts for Fire and Air (lightning)

Braziers

Rules:
Rules are hopefully around 80% there. I think some balance and tweaking is going to be needed. We did 3 playtest games and it seems to work. I have attached the rules PDF for anyone who wants to take a look.
I need to get some help with playtesting properly and balancing and tweaking the rules yet.
For now that is all! I'll start to upload some artwork and concepts soon
