Finally, pictures. I wanted to comment this morning, but I didn't have the time.

You're absolutely right. Painted minis always look better than unpainted ones, provided it's a clean paintjob with good color choice.
That's why we need more pictures from casual painters... to show those who wonder if they should start that it can be done without botching it.
It's necessary for the hobby.
I do like the combo of your paintjob/the quality thereof and the choice of minis. It's a cohesive style, oldschool, so to speak, and giving a very '80s/'90s-RPG-like, which at your table should be a very very good thing.

You could go for more shading and highlighting if you wanted to, as Slev says, and it would be the next step qualitywise, but...
firstly you know that |_P
and secondly, you made a choice |_P (in terms of effort, I guess)
But as it is, there's nothing to complain about here.

The Dwarf Warrior chick with a hammer I painted it to look like it was painted years ago and I actually think I pulled it off.
The mini's have some molding marks. The pregnant lady is the worst of the bunch. My favorite is the Ork female with the war axe. I even went the extra mile with her and the lizard lady and gave them sandy bases. I take liquid green stuff and slather it on the base thick, then I pour some sand over it. After things dry I will spray with some finish. I got the sand from a sand bag one buys in the winter for the car. I used 3 different sifters to get 3 grades of sand for my mini's. The sand used was the fine and medium mixed together.

Now I am working on seventeen 15mm goblins. It is a small squad or a platoon of soldiers, complete with drummers standard bearers and a commander. As they are 15mm and most of my mini's are 25 and 28 they will work great as goblins for my table as they tend to be a bit more diminutive in the setting we play than they are typically molded.

I think you should sand all the minis like you did with the orc. It looks much better that the green coins in my opinion.

This is true, but I have them color coded for my reference when I am the GM.

I tend to use the color coding of the bases for personal information. Like if I drop a group of NPC adventurers/monsters on the battle map and I put one with a yellow base in a group of greens, there will be something about that NPC that is special or I am trying to remember.

These ladies all have green bases to indicate they are 'good' (positive Karma people) and the sand bases are typically very powerful NPC's. Also I sand base mini's that will set in the window or on the living room shelf in display. If I put them in the Warhammer case, they will shed some sand inevitably. I have over 500 mini's, so I can't put them all on display.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate it.

My goblins are only about 1/4 the way done. Yesterday I was lazy and did very little of anything.

Some day, some day....

First I need to move into a home large enough that I can claim a game room. Then I will get 4 China Hutches and rock it out tight.
1 Hutch will be just for the HQ miniatures I have. I think I have 3 complete sets worth of minis, plus some expansion minis. I don't have any of the expensive quest packs, but I have plenty of mini's that can proxy.

When I was painting this mini set I even came up with a story line for them.
The heroines are a band of women who are escorting the pregnant lady to the dragons nest to destroy the eggs, or the spell she was cursed with will take place and the child she carries will die and the life essence of the child will infuse with the eggs and they will spawn forth Dragon Men/Dracomen. The Ork lady and the Lizardman "lady" (kind of hard to gender identify a lizard...) are the villains. The Lizard lady is a former success at creating a Dracoman (Dracolady?) and the Ork is a Shaman with a plan. Of course along the way of the quest the heroines will face many ork warriors and the villains. All while trying to keep the pregnant woman alive so she may exact her vengeance on the Shaman that cursed her child, and give birth to her child.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

Oh more story idea:

Once the eggs are crushed by the pregnant woman, she goes into labor and the cave is assaulted by a handful of Fimir who wish to steal this child and make it into Fimir. The child has great magic potential and the Fimir want that mojo themselves.
Of course once the Fimir are killed off the baby is born healthy and crying.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

I have already kicked in for the full set. :D

My spouse saw the owlbear and was all over it. I don't get it...she knows if I have an owlbear I am likely to use it. muhahaha (I have a giant owlbear for Pathfinder, Beaky The Owlbear. But it is just too huge.)
Image of Beaky:

Looking forward to the smaller one, I can actually use a smaller one. Beaky is just ridiculous in size.
