I also am looking for a consistent or common standard to apply within my own house rules and possibly beyond, around text conventions, including but not limited to capitalisation.
I'm keep to hear from others around text conventions that exist (even if inconsistent) and where they don't exist or are not consistent what do we prefer as many eyeballs tame complexity?
Not precious about whether we adopt UK, US, 1st, 2nd Edition conventions or a blend of them all, with a little common Inn sense applied.
The conventions below are from the US (1st) Edition Instruction Booklet, may not be the best place to start but you have to start somewhere!
Capitalisation
• Hero (but not monster?)
• Barbarian, Dwarf, Elf, Wizard
• Goblin, Orc, Fimir (now Troll), Chaos Warrior (Dread Warrior), Chaos Warlock (Dread Sorcerer), Gargoyle, Skeletons, Zombie, Mummy (monster 'types' are capitalised but not the word 'Monster')
#characteristics/attributes
• Attack Die
• Defend Die (but not combat dice even though they are components? what about red dice?)
• Body Point
• Mind Point
#components
• Armoury
• Identification Guide
• Monster Chart
• Information Screen
• Character Card
• Monster Card
• Treasure Card
• Artifact Card
• Chaos (Dread) Spell Card and Chaos (Dread) Spell
• Air Spell Card
• Fire Spell Card
• Water Spell Card
• Earth Spell Card
#HeroQuest specific terminology
• Quest, Quest Packs, Quest Book, Quest Notes, Quest Map
• Chaos (now Dread)
• Healing Spell
• Healing Potion (should be Potion of Healing? and not consistent capitalisation sometimes 'Healing potion')
• Empire (now Realm)
• Emperor (now King)
• Hero Quest (but I'm ignoring that convention and using HeroQuest)
• Parchment Text
• Starting Weapon
• Wandering Monster
• Air, Fire, Water, Earth
• Hazard (and also Hazard Card but that one isn't consistent)
• Evil Sorcerer
I'm also thinking about adding a couple of my own
• Character - term used where the rule refer to both Heroes and/or monsters
• Gamemaster or GameMaster - haven't decided yet but this applies to that player's role as they aren't always Zargon/Morcar but sometimes other characters such as Mentor when reading the Parchment Text
And some other thoughts/notes/comments
• Numbers are generally (but not universally) presented as a number '3' as opposed to a word 'three'
• JUMP and DISARM are sometimes fully capitalised, initially I thought that was a convention around them being actions (but not actually actions but something that the Heroes do... need a better word 'tasks' or 'free actions'?) but this is inconsistent with regards to those two words specifically and isn't applied to other 'proper' actions like attack perhaps all actions including free actions should regarded as "key words" and be in bold or similar to make them stand out like: attack, throw, shoot, cast, search, loot, disarm, look, open, quaff, jump?
