Rock formations for unused rooms build

Postby phoenixcinder » October 11th, 2020, 2:53 am

For my next HQ project I will be building rock formations to be used for rooms that are not used in the current quest. Will post progression here in case it gives anyone some ideas.

This is a rough concept of what I am going for.

Got a bunch of rocks, but they were filthy so had to wash them all before beginning

they add a very nice effect to the 3D board but they will also reveal which areas are not a real room, so basically you are revealing part of the map to the heroes.

Yeah I wouldn’t place them unless the Hero walked through walls.

Alternately, You could make covers for all the rooms, and remove them every time a room is revealed to the adventurers. Which is closer to the “map reveal/fog of war” effect. And eventually the entire map will be revealed. (A room sized-flip the card and reveal the room.)

So cover the entire board and remove as necessary?
I may have to scrap this idea.

That's the exact same gravel I use for my 1x1 and 1x2 blockage tokens. Doing it for a whole room seems a bit unnecessary to me - if there is no door then they can't get in that room anyway.

Its more the esthetics really. Never really liked how the rooms that aren't being used still show the squares and colors. Doesn't really give the feel of it not being an actual room.

Decided to go the cover the whole board route, and remove as needed.

Cut pieces for all of the rooms and outer corridor then sliced the edges up roughen them.

Trimmed to size where needed to ensure there will be room for my low lying walls.

Painted Black and started attaching the rocks using construction adhesive

Going to take a fair amount of time to get these all done

I’m going to recommend a “pull tab” or cord placed in the center of your formation so that you can easily lift the “rock board” up off the custom table. Probably through the underside of the card.
