HQ Monster Builder

Postby Patroclus » January 2nd, 2017, 3:13 pm

This is the HQ Monster Builder, a program that helps you with the stats of the monsters. For example you want to make the stats for a centaur. You have to see some stats from the original monsters and choose what fits better. This is exactly what this program does.

By increasing or decreasing the numbers, the program shows the monsters with the same stats. So, you may see that the movement of the giant wolf is 9 and this information could help you in your decision. About the attack, maybe the attack of the ogre warrior is the best for your centaur, etc.
Image
You can import an image for your monster.

In this example I choose the speed of giant wolf, the attack of an ogre warrior, the defence of a chaos warrior, the body of an ogre champion, and the mind of an orc. So, my stats are S9/A5/D4/B4/M2, you may choose something different, it's up to you.

You can also press next and write the special abilities, and then press export to pdf, to print your card.

I hope you like it. Have fun.

And this is the next version with the addition of the Import Icon button (you can find the png icons in the Heroscribe folders. Just use the windows search with a part of the monster's name.)

This is a really cool gadget! Simple and intuitive.

May I ask; will there be a "Feature Request" aspect to this project at some point in the future? For example, it would be useful to have a second image field specifically for Icons?

Regardless, this thing is quite nifty as is.

Yes, I should do that. But I won’t include all the images from heroscribe. I will just put another button for one more png file and you have to browse through the folders of heroscribe to find the icon in png format.

OK once again, this is amazing job made by Patroclus.
One small complain is that avast antivirus recognizes this as a very rare and harmfull file and doesn't allow me to install the program.
Other than that, it looks great! I shall give it a proper go when I get the chance.

Ok, I’ve make the changes and I’ve update the first post and the link.

About the antivirus I am not sure why it doesn’t let you execute it. It does not need installation. It’s just an exe that uses the .net framework and a dll for pdfs. I think you have to put an exception inside your antivirus.

When you run other programs, as heroscribe, do you have the same issue?

Nope, Heroscribe didn't give me any problems apart from the fact that needed Java Runtime Environment. I shall try again.

EDIT: OK, second time's the charm. Everything went smoothly. Works great! Many thanks for a very handy tool |_P |_P

Too freaking cool! And talk about quick support, sweet. With the simplicity of use for this thing, I can see a ton of future potential here for other card types--Character, Spell, Search, Etc.--or even dare I say cards from other games as well?

Also, would it be possible to anchor the location of the Icons, i.e. force them to remain in a specific location? I noticed that they change location depending on the size of the image.

And finally, how long did it take you to design the basic template? What would it take to make more variable settings such as Card size, being able to change the background image, adding or removing stat blocks, and so on? Just a few places my brain went when I started thinking about the possibilities with such a tool.

But yeah, I like this thing a lot. Interestingly, I have never been able to get Heroscribe to work. I don't recall the last time I tried to find it, D/L, and run it, but it's been a while.

Never the less, very cool tool here Patroclus, thanks for sharing it.

We have already make a program as community that makes spells and treasure cards, but it was so hard to use it that I've make a manual to explain everything. It's ok for me. I've made some cards for spells and they look great, but I am not sure how many people use it. From then the simplicity is the most important thing for me.
This is the thread of the HQ Card Maker: http://forum.yeoldeinn.com/viewtopic.php?f=165&t=1933

QorDaq wrote:Also, would it be possible to anchor the location of the Icons, i.e. force them to remain in a specific location? I noticed that they change location depending on the size of the image.

If you download the heroscribe you will find all the icons inside that works perfectly. They are about 50x50 pixels. Some of them are more wide or tall, but they all keep the same scale, and that's why I can't force an image to have a specific size because I will ruin the scale. Also, I don't want to put more options because I have to keep it friendly to use. I suggest you to download the heroscribe or resize your images to the right scale.

I found the template from the forum and I had a similar program for character creation, so the main functions was ready. The thread for this is here http://forum.yeoldeinn.com/viewtopic.php?f=165&t=2227

But for more variants you need the HQ Card Maker. You can even make cards in the cm you want. For example you can make mini cards or larger cards, everything you want. You can even print tiles. Just put an image and you could give the dimentions in cm that you want for printing. But I don't remember how exactly it works. You have to write the path of the images, and the texts in the excel that comes with the program, and then the program reads the excel. It needs some work but the result is great.

Thanks Patroclus, I appreciate the info and references.

I suppose I fall into the category of folk who can "Almost" work the computer I'm typing on, and have never been able to get HQ Card Maker, or HeroScribe for that matter, to work properly. So apologies for my getting eager in the light of a possible tool that would be simpler to use.

None of which takes away from the usefulness or functionality of your Monster Maker, which is great.
