Finally finishing!

Postby Jalapenotrellis » February 25th, 2024, 12:47 am

After starting all the quests in HeroQuest in 2019 February, my group has finally made it all the way to the last and final quest of the Frozen Horror. Also have nearly all the minis painted except some of the ogres from against the ogre horde and the female barbarian.

What did yall play after finishing heroquest? Any other games? I also play some d&d.

HeroQuest can never be finished. There's all the new stuff constantly coming out, plus hidden gems from the past like the Brazilian quests. Not to mention the thousands of fan-made.

My vote is on Risk Legacy. You could get 15 games out of this one to claim the world.

Believe it or not, my group has struggled to meet since this post. We scheduled for 3 different dates and then got flaked on or someone got sick or someone's work went longer than it should that night. I interview guys to join the group who say they are interested and then no show last minute even after meeting them in person and them being reasonable people.

Either I'm a bad judge of character or wtf is wrong with people? Say you aren't interested and aren't coming rather than schedule and then no show after I get people together.

Anyhow.

Last quest. I'm selecting the spells for the frozen horror. He gets 12 spells! But the heroes have a Sky Orb, artifacts that make them immune to the chill and mind freeze spells, a fire ring, and a full loaded spell reflection staff.

It would be dumb to load up on spells that get reflected like fear, command, sleep, tempest, werewolf curse, lightning bolt, cloud of chaos, or use fire spells like ball of flame or firestorm. The best spell from wizards of morcar was the earthquake spell, but even that would be reflected and devastating.

So I'm thinkin of using summon orcs, summon undead, summon wolves, the heal options restore chaos, possibly reanimation. I think the heroes have plenty of potions so are unlikely to die. But if u just used the crowd control spells or mind spells, against the spell reflection staff they would just cake walk thru the final battle since it reflects them against all in the room and none affect the heroes. I think it would completely trivialize the encounter. But maybe they will need that by the end. Maybe I'll change up the spells depending on how dead and out of resources they are by the end.

Curious what others did against the fully geared players by this expansion.

Actually, you CAN throw in Werewolf Curse, if he reflects it with Ancient Staff, this could only help you. As Zargon you still control all monsters under the Werewolf Curse, who, if I'm not mistaken, have the same stats as Giant Wolves. So you can summon orcs and on your next turn use Werewolf Curse. If he reflects it all those orcs now have the potential for Giant Wolf stats if they turn.
If you're going for Summon Undead, might as well keep Reanimation handy to bring them all back.

Lightning Bolt has the potential to be reflected by the Elf with Ancient Staff, but if positioned correctly the direct line of the bolt might pass through heroes too.

You can also use Restore Chaos, another healing spell would be helpful. Mirror Magic too would be nice.

I find the Ancient Staff overpowered too, so in my group I count it as a hindrance too. Like the traditional Staff, it could be counted as a weapon too. Thus the Elf needs to have the Staff equipped to use it. At least that's how I allow it to work in my group. Sure, the Elf can reflect spells on a monster's turn, but on his turn he only has 1 attack dice.
Just something to think about.

Don’t forget about the Dread spell, Skate. This would allow the FH to move through heroes and attack from behind. Being in a narrow corridor can help prevent multiple heroes attacking on any given turn. Despite his size the FH is allowed to move unhindered on the board. This might be an option to consider as well.

Ah maybe people are afraid of the bittersweet "ending." You can always play more HeroQuest if you want to, there are more official or famous quests out there you can play even if you don't want to create any of your own.

Great ideas on the werewolf curse and the skate positioning! Maybe I can finally kill that pesky weakling wizard :) The elf is too powerful to kill... Unless piled on with bears and wolves.
