Solo / cooperative project

Hello one and all, I am currently right at the beginning of a fanmade project to add solo/cooperative rules to Hero Quest. There will be some bells and whistles to accompany the solo/coop rules, such as Event cards and a Settlement Phase, but the bulk of the project will be adding components and rules for random dungeons that don't require an Evil Wizard player.

I have hit a small wall that I would like everyone's opinion on, if you don't mind? Dungeon boards (or tiles)! Originally I was going to use the Warhammer Quest format, but convert the original HQ board into separate tiles... however, the design of the original board makes that very difficult (the rooms are oddly shaped). SO I instead started playing around with the Advanced HeroQuest tiles, and while I can get that to work, the separate passage and room formats would require two decks of cards. This version would be more complex. SO THEN I started resizing Warhammer Quest tiles, and played around with Dungeon cards for those.

So my question is... what would YOU prefer? A more complex dungeon system that uses Advanced HeroQuest tiles, or a simpler system that uses Warhammer Quest tiles?

Thanks :dwarf:

I forgot to mention, mechanically, the AHQ system would require two decks... Room and Passage. Room cards would all be 5x5 or 5x10, and have icons on them for furniture and monster placement. The WQ system would also require two decks... Dungeon and Patrol. Dungeon cards would feature specific tiles with special rules, such as "cannot search in this room" or "restore up to one Mind point". The patrol cards would feature icons for monster placement on a 4x4 grid.

Doesn't AHQ have generation rules for the HQ board?

AHQ has a sort of random generation for the original HQ board, but it's... well, have you ever used the AHQ dungeon generation mechanics? Lots of tables that quite often lead to nothing.

Yeah, keep it simple was where my head was at. Thanks.

If you haven’t had an opportunity to look at the HQ Modular over on HQ-Cooperation.

They took the core board (though it was a German board with some wider corridors) and broke the board into pieces/components.

There are solo rules that exist over on Boardgame Geek: (this set is among the more complete)
