2 New Campaigns

Postby mikemacdee » May 30th, 2013, 10:56 pm

I need feedback from other adventure designers on these 7-Quest adventures! I've uploaded them as .doc files because it's a hassle to get them .pdf converted at my house and I don't wanna run back and forth between PC's when I know I'll only update things within 24 hours. I'd greatly appreciate anyone who takes the time to read through these and just share their thoughts and suggestions on difficulty adjustment and such.

Eschaton
A decade has passed since the Empire fell to Ulrik the Fiend and his god-given weapon, the Eschaton. He has ruled the land ever since, his power unchallenged thanks to his godly weapon and his unbreakable suit of armor forged by the Black Dwarves of Ash Mountain. A small group of heroes decide the time is ripe for an assassination, if they can only forge a weapon capable of breaking the Fiend's armor.

Legacy of the White Mage
EDIT: I'm expanding this one into an even bigger campaign -- possibly 12 Quests!
Alkanis was once a powerful nation, but their most recent war plunged the land into two generations of famine and disease, leaving the easily-corrupted ration-holders as the de facto rulers of each city. In the capital city Sirus, our heroes attempt an expedition to the manse of the reclusive White Mage, whose powers may restore life to the land and save its people from the ration-holders...except the expedition is stopped by Sheriff Gallos, the most brutal ration-holder of them all. The heroes must escape the Sheriff and see the expedition through, or die trying.

 I was working on an almost identical map to 'The Ebony Spire' for the final quest of 'Dealing with Death'.

I've only had a quick look through these. I let you know what I think when I've had time to read through them properly.

Gratz mikemacdee, your campaigns are awesome! I don’t want to read them all because I wand to play them first.

ps: I’ve checked the final boss from the first campaign and I’ve found less body points than expected and a powerful attack, and this is a combination I don’t like but it is not a problem.

I also like the special rules

lol You mean a crazy tower o' mystery? or almost room-for-room identical? Weird either way.

You could always use two boards for your tower. I briefly considered doing that.

Thanks for lookin', guys!

Take a look for yourself

5 floors with the centre room as the top floor, sound familiar?

I was planning on pit traps making you fall through the floor to the floor below with room E on floor 4 having a special tile similar to the end of Indiana Jones & the last crusade. The number of staircases put me off finishing this quest (if you divide the map up and stack the sections on top of each other you will see that all the staircases line up).

I think I like the layout of your tower better. Half a dozen stairways would be a problem, though. Could you swap them for doors without going over the door limit?

Just found time to read through 'Eschaton' and I am very impressed.

I think there is a reason for this because of how the heroes kill Ulrik the Fiend and how powerful his attacks are against them.
@mikemacdee. Has this battle been playtested? How many attacks did it take to defeat Ulrik? How many of the Heroes survived?

I did find this in quest 3
Zargon should indicate which rooms are buildings at the start of the Quest.

I can't see where on the map you indicate which rooms are buildings. Have I missed something?

Finally, I really like the puzzles you put into your quests and the way you use the furniture & map . The stories are really good as well.

Thanks for the notes and kind words, Road. Neither of these have been tested yet because I was hoping to get some nice men-at-arms stand-ins for the White Mage (we saw how that turned out). I was planning to do a solo player test run after printing all my quest books at kinko's but haven't done so yet.

I'll better clarify what I mean by "buildings" in Quest 3: it's any room with monsters, furniture, etc, with the dark areas being chasm.

It would be nice to have proper Skaven stats for the White Mage so I can provide them in the book itself and further encourage their use, but everyone's Skaven stats are different... (White Mage is much more brutal I think, and I'm gonna do at least one more edit before printing it out)

UPDATED Legacy of the White Mage. First Quest shouldn't be quite so brutal now: heroes can take fallen enemies' weapons, which are lousy quality and break easily.
Also updated Eschaton a bit. Hailstorm Bridge description hopefully fixed now, along with a couple other tweaks (mining and forging should be less tedious as well).

Also tested the Fiend battle: Elf used crossbow and heroic brew to soften up both chaos warriors. Barbarian and Dwarf tried to finish them off and failed. Wizard tried to put a warrior to sleep and failed. Heroes lucked out when fimir and chaos warriors attacked and failed to kill them. Fiend went for the Wizard first and dropped him, but he had 1 healing spell left. By end of next round only the fimir was left alive. Heroes won the quest.

These were also heroes who had started brand new with basically nothing and worked their way up to the Fiend. Tougher ride than I expected, but doable with my house rules. Probably much harder for rule purists or smaller parties (though smaller parties get more gold per hero).

Finished the Eschaton playtest and updated again. Considering adding a disclaimer recommending the use of experienced heroes, but I won't add that 'til someone else has tried at least a Quest or two.

I played through with all four base heroes, all fresh and inexperienced, and they triumphed...surviving by the skin of their teeth, and only thanks to my house rules for fallen heroes if nothing else. Purists will probably go through a few heroes before the end of this one. The Black Dwarves of Ash Mountain proved quite a force to be reckoned with despite only appearing in 2 Quests.

In short I think if you have a group of experienced heroes looking for a challenge, Eschaton might satisfy them.

Now on to Legacy...
