HeroQuest Campaigns completed (2026 list)

Postby Kurgan » March 29th, 2026, 12:10 pm

In the past 5 years here are the campaigns we've completed with other players:

(these were done virtually, remotely)

Barbarian Quest Pack: the Frozen Horror (10 quests + Into the Northlands)
Elf Quest Pack: Mage of the Mirror (10 quests)
Rise of the Dread Moon (10 quests + Knightfall)
Joe Maganiello's Crypt of Perpetual Darkness (10 quests)
Jungles of Delthrak (10 quests)

Note, these were not played "in order" with the same group of heroes. We kept character sheets between sessions and new players dropped in and out throughout the course of each campaign (though we did have several regulars after awhile). BQP lead into EQP and CoPD then ATOH. ROTDM was a new group that lead into JoD.

Additional One off's:
The Plague of Zombies (only 1 hero escaped alive!)
Arena Mode / Tournament Battles (ATOH inspired) - we did about a half dozen of these
Game System (played "The Rescue of Sir Ragnar" and "Lair of the Orc Warlord" with Sirdeath and others using the HQ Companion App)
[before we started recording/streaming things, we played the first maybe 8 of the GS quests, out of order, with various people including iKarith, Rath of Un, and any others I'm forgetting, sorry it's been awhile!]

Incomplete:

Against the Ogre Horde (we're on the last quest of the remake edition!)
New Beginnings (started it as a prelude to "First Light")
Arena battle (with Amalgamash...! this was before Avalon Hill released their version with the remake of ATOH)

Offline I've played "New Beginnings" quite a few times, using the App, as well as the Forsaken Tunnels of Xor Xel and Dread on the Horizon. Back in the day we played the GS (and "The Trial" many, many times) as well as ROTWL and KK. And several quests we made ourselves! I had played the first 4 (?) ATOH quests in the classic version (and attempted but never finished the 5th) and played the solo quests of BQP and partway into the EQP ones.

At GenCon we played the various promo quests, which was a lot of fun too!

PS: Recorded games of HispaZargon's modification of "The Dark Company" as four quests. |_P

PPS: We haven't played a lot of homebrew quests on the public streams otherwise but we did run "Dark Magic" the prequel quest that Lucapaschi wrote for the upcoming fan finished version of the Wizard Quest Pack ("The Sinister Sorcerers") which of course is based on the official (but unreleased, incomplete) drafts of that pack from the 90's.

PPPS: When we do start SQT/PoT I haven't decided yet if it will be the same group doing both one after the other or if both will be "self contained" adventures with a fresh group of heroes on each. Judging by feedback I'm thinking probably it's best if each is a fresh character group.

Lot of games!! My congrats!

A bit surprised about you did not play Prophecy of Telor nor Spirit Queens Torment, and I think you could have also added to the list the several playtests of The Dark Company that you led, since they were so close to real games in my humble opinion |_P

I think with the level of quests being played, those two would be a little too easy. But I presume a fresh party is doing First Light, so perhaps they will then do them after that..

Dark Company is on my horizon for playing along with WoM.

Yeah, PoT and SQT are not so difficult, they can be considered as KK in terms of difficulty, in my opinion.

Crikey, no idea in the last 5 years, but in the last 3 of years I would say I've played these with my brother. We play roughly 3 a year and these are the last 8 plus a couple of singles:

Against the Ogre Horde (new)
Rise of the Valkyries
Rise of the Dread Moon
Spirit Queens Torment
Prophecy of Telor
Destruction of the Tomes
Jungles of Delthrak
Quest for the Sword
Towers of Ice and Death (single quest)
Knight Fall (single quest)

I have solo play tested the above as well as The Empire's Last Gleaming during the same period.

Since the advent of the companion app, I played much of them myself mostly. While my friends do enjoy the game, they typically would rather play d&d. If I had a better place in which I could host game nights, HeroQuest would see more group play. After the GS, I typically mix experienced heroes with new heroes I haven tried yet. For new beginnings, I used the Knight, Druid, Bard, and Rogue.

RotWL was notably much harder than it should have been initially because of this (all 4 heroes falling in the same pit trap all at once in the first quest didn’t help either). New Heroes had to survive their first quest with their default equipment, and they would have to earn their first major upgrade before the were entitled to the main party’s hand-me-downs. Entirely new groups didn’t get any handouts (FL, CoPD).

So far (on the app):
GS: Base Heroes
New Beginnings: Knight, Druid, Bard, Rogue
KK: Knight, Dwarf, Druid, Wizard
RotWL: Barbarian, Elf, Bard, Rogue
PoT: Base Heroes
SQT: Knight, Bard, Monk, Warlock
FH: Barbarian, Dwarf, Druid, Monk
MotM: Elf, Wizard, Rogue, Warlock
First Light: New Base Heroes
CoPD: Berserker, Elf, Scout, Wizard (All new characters for this too)
RotDM (currently playing): Knight, New Berserker, Wizard, Rogue

I was a little surprised to make it through CoPD with entirely new heroes, but it makes sense story-wise. Despite the weird story, I found this particular pack more enjoyable than I thought it would be.

Yeah the plan is to finish New Beginnings to lead into First Light with one party of heroes. Against the Ogre Horde will wrap up the adventure for the group of heroes playing it now. Sometime next month a different (and new) party of heroes will begin Wizards of Morcar (using Dread on the Horizon as a prelude).

Originally I was going to play Spirit Queen's Torment and Prophecy of Telor together on alternate days but people voted for the above instead.

How did you get through Frozen Horror with all new heroes?
No Against the Ogre Horde?
By the looks of your list, I assume you don't have the Monk.
I'm a little curious how you faired in Mage of the Mirror with this set of heroes... It's a weak lineup, though the Fear & Sleep spells can go a long way against Giant Wolves... But the Elf is the default tank with Elven Bracers and Chainmail.

Generally what I do is run a bunch of random draws through the Game System, like different groups through each quest. The group that takes out the Fire Mage doesn't necessarily have to be the same group that rescued Ragnar and killed Ulag. You get to experiment with a lot of different heroes this way.
First Light was run through by the Barbarian, Druid, Dwarf & Elf. After First Light & the Game System was complete I returned everybody to the hero deck and randomly drew 4 heroes to run Keller's Keep and save the King: the Dwarf from First Light was drawn so he has a Battle Axe & Borin's Armor, teaming with a Barbarian who only had 2 quests from the Game System (with enough gold to buy a helmet), the female Berserker (who only ran 1 quest and only has a helmet and Potion of Healing), and the Bard armed with a Crossbow, he was present when the Elf defeated the Witch Lord so has the Spell Ring too, so his Healing Song is obviously going in there.

From there I'll be taking the female Barbarian (with the Talisman of Lore) and giving her 3 other companions that may or may not have served in other quests to run Prophecy of Telor.

Another random draw for Spirit Queen's Torment & one for Return of the Witch Lord. However once you get to the bigger expansions, I'll return everyone to the hero deck and hopefully come up with a group of 4 willing to handle the hardships of Against the Ogre Horde, Frozen Horror and the rest.
