Warhammer World references for HQ

Postby j_dean80 » March 3rd, 2024, 6:18 pm

So, everyone already knows the list of all published things related to HQ. I wanted to compile a list of Warhammer World references that can be used for gathering lore and creating quests for HQ. What we know is Warhammer Fantasy Battle 3rd edition is the world HQ was derived from. It takes place approximately 200 years after HQ on the timeline. Therefore, the history can be referenced for HQ times. If I missed anything for the list, please let me know.

I would add the splendid The World Of Warhammer soft cover book 1998 (192 pages)
The Empire at War soft cover book 2006 (96 pages)
Liber Necris soft cover book 2006 (96 pages)
Liber Chaotica Soft Cover book 2005 (close to 400 unnumbered pages I lost count)
Uniforms and Heraldry of The Empire hard cover book 2008 (72 pages)
these all have tons of lore and in-game history of the Old World Fantasy setting including much on the relevant time period setting of original HeroQuest (2304-2335 on the Imperial Calendar)
Warhammer The Old World~ Map of the Old World fold out large map (set in 2276 Imperial Calendar)

Although the actual production time period of the GW/MB HeroQuest products (1988-1993) and GW/MB Battle Masters (1992) straddled the time period of 3rd (Oct. 1987-Oct. 1992) and 4th editions (Oct. 1992-Oct. 1996) of Warhammer Fantasy Battle, I feel that any of the Army books, boxed sets, rule books etc. of Warhammer Fantasy of any edition could be useful for HQ reference material same goes for any material from any edition of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay.
Same goes for any other game placed in the WH fantasy setting such as Mordheim, Man-O-War, Chaos Marauders, Mighty Empires, Warmaster, Dread Fleet, Mighty Warriors etc.
Several video games have used the WH fantasy setting as well.

It would be interesting to get all of these current in-game dates of each game on the setting timeline for HQ reference here:

Warhammer The Old World starts at the date 2276 on the Imperial Calendar around 28-59 (30-60) years BEFORE the postulated HeroQuest time period.

HeroQuest is assumed to be 2304-2335 on the Imperial Calendar based on clues in the HQ material compared with Warhammer events, same postulated time frame for Battle Masters as well. Advanced HeroQuest also seems to run concurrently as the same exact Heroes from HeroQuest can be used and are prominent in the game art so same dates in the timeline.
Warhammer Quest ? I will have to peruse the game book and see if it gives any dates

WarHammer Fantasy Battle 1E no IC reference dates but Heinrich Kemmler the Lich lord raises Krell in 2491
WH FB 2E sometime just after Karl Franz declared Emperor in 2502
WH FB 3E is set starting in 2512 IC (some 200 years AFTER HeroQuest dates on the Old World Imperial Calendar timeline) much of WH 3rd edition was published around the same real world time as HeroQuest 1987-1992

the remaining WH editions happen right before, during or right after the Storm of Chaos in 2522 (Games Workshop retconned this timeline with the End Time events)
WH FB 4E takes place starting in 2520 IC Right before the Storm of Chaos
WH FB 5E takes place starting in 2521 IC right before the Storm of Chaos
WH FB 6E takes place 2522 IC During the Storm of chaos
WH FB 7E takes place 2522 IC During the Storm of Chaos
WHFb 8E 2522 IC during the storm of Chaos
WarHammer Fantasy Role Play 1E (1986) starts at 2512 IC
WHFRP 2E (2005) set around 2523 IC
WHFRP 3E (2009) Set around 2522 IC
WHFRP 4E is set around 2510 or so on the Imperial Calendar
Mordheim is destroyed around 1999-2000 IC as I understand it the game storyline starts right after (at least 300 years BEFORE HeroQuest)
WarHammer Total War video game is set around 2502 IC

Only thing about adding later releases is some things were changed. An example is the entire magic class system.

I have this book. No Fimir in it, so I tracked down a vintage copy of the 3rd edition core book. Thanks for the references!

HeroQuest physical releases 1989-1992 are the time period of Warhammer Fantasy I'm most interested in (yes, I know the third HQ novel was released in '93, it was the only significant new addition of official lore other than the obscure Legacy of Sorasil Amiga video game the following year). The main base of HQ content was '89, it was the release of the first edition, KK and ROTWL as well as Advanced HeroQuest.

Anything could be used for inspiration when it comes to HeroQuest or proxied material, I'm just most interested in materials that may have directly inspired things within the game.

Obviously when it comes to the Remake it's a little harder to guess since so much time had passed since the demise of the original franchise (1993-94) until the Haslab product (2021).
