Gold, coins, money!

I have been thinkering with the idea of making "real" metal money for the game. Something you hold on to, get when you deserve it in stead of writing down how much gold you have. I'm already talking to a company that can cast these for a decent price and but ofcource to more people would be interested in these

I know there are a bunch coins out there for DnD but Heroquest is not DnD and should have its own coins!
I would love to hear your idea's on what you think the coints would look like!

For me, Im thinking 3 kinds of gold coins. A 1 piece, a 20 piece and a 100 piece, there are a bunch of example for warhammer but I really like the look of the coins from darkworld. Not perfect rounds, but have roman feeling to them without beeing to obscure! Made out of metal but be coated in a fake gold! I'm dying to hear if other people feel the same, or think its a ridiculous idea!

Fake coins could be a lot of fun at a table, but if it's 1:1 the actual gold given in the game, some quests could call for a lot of those and it could get a littler ridiculous!

I have some round cardboard tokens that are kind of fake coins... one says "mercenary" on it and I was using as a merc token, the other has the image of the person I still consider to be the likeness of Zargon on it, used for elite bad guys and as a turn marker for the evil wizard player. I presume the money of the Empire would probably resemble something from the Holy Roman Empire or inspired by that, a small gold coin. As I was looking I found a news article from a few days ago about a hidden cache of Byzantine coins here. Who says buried treasure isn't real?

Anyway, many ways to enhance the experience, I hope you find one that works! Maybe like one coin represents a certain amount of gold or something... because your hero could be carrying 500-1000 (usually at that point you'll start spending it) after just a few quests.

The Gloomhaven website has a money “upgrade” pack which is a cloth bag with a bunch of metal fake coins for use with a few different gloomhaven themed games.

It seemed to come with a large number of coins in three increments, but probably only in 1s, 5s, and 10s, so it may or may not work with Heroquest.

I think using coins of some kind would be great, but only to hand out in the current quest. The total should be recorded on the character sheet at the end of the session, since a hero could eventually have hundreds of gold pieces on hand, as previously mentioned.

Owh absolutely agree. That its not for holding on giant amount of coints with you, but more something you can hand out .

I love those Byzantine coins. Some people I talked to are wamt to have a bronze silver and gold coin, but In HQ there is only gold in my opion.

I have been looking around about what coins they used in the old world and have some good idea's about the design.
I might wanna do a small, medium big coin. This way its all gold, but clear that a big one can be 50/100/1000 what ever we want without having a number on it.

@Kurgan do you have any suggestions on what would be on the "heroquest" currency?

I was toying with the idea of getting coins for the game: I saw a few types online that were pretty cool, and themed with a human/dwarf/elven and orc style. After all, it's gold coins, but they could very well be from that goblin's personal hoard! I think for HQ there should be 1-5-10-20-50-100 and maybe even 500 denominations though, as the amount of gold you can find can be pretty variable and sometimes it's mathematically calculated. You could cross out the 1s by rounding up or down to 5, but that's it.

There is a Skullz promotion Emperor Karl Franz coin for WFB, I'd think human coins could look something like that (this example has been painted, but kinda goves you an idea https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/154014449200). Well after looking into WH coins I really like the estalina coin, it reminded me of the image on the last page of the questbook.

Would be a very neutral coin, ofcource these need to be redesigned but give a wonderfull base to work on HQ currency. Would you rather have then round or in different shapes?

Well, if you want to differentiate, different shapes/themes dounds good, if you just want them to be tokens sort of, then a single shape/image would be enough.
GW did some plastic coins for a few games (Talisman/Blood royale) with a simple symbol and the denomination (https://boardgamegeek.com/image/148587/ ... rd-edition), that could also be an idea to start from.

So I started sketching and i really like where I ended up after a while. So the idea is:
3 coins, S,M,L. The small coint has the skull, the Middle coin will have beast shield on it, and the L will have a "lion" shield on it. No numbers so you can use them any way you like for multiple games or values.
Because I want this to be the real first Hq linked coin, I was thinking about putting the mentor seal on the back of all these coins. I know that isn't really "in the world of" but I kinda like the idea of having that as a seal on the gold! I mean, mentor is sending us out on all these dangerous questst
