Ugliest HeroQuest minature?

Postby lestodante » March 27th, 2022, 7:17 pm

Please let me know which one you consider the ugliest figure in HeroQuest (1989-1992 version).
Please vote only the sculpt of the miniature, not the features or how dangerour it can be in game.
The poll is only for the classic version of the game, not for the new release.

The Yeti... I think the sculpt is low detailed, and it is not enough menacing as expected for a snow monster. Nevetheless, it is not bad at all, but compared with the rest... for me is the ugliest.

Seems like all the stranger oddball figures came with the expansions.
The evil elf mage Sinestra is the most dumb looking original HQ sculpt in my opinion.
As a teen I can remember thinking "what is this? a stooped over wrinkly grandma or granddad elf wizard figure with uncle scrooge hair perhaps?" lame.
Elves (or elfs if you prefer that alternative spelling) age very slowly and even at great age show few outward signs of their advanced age according to all of the established widely accepted folklore, mythology, literature and fantasy gaming worlds especially in Tolkien which is the default fantasy elf source.
Besides Santa Claus and his Mrs. which are not really the same sort of elves we are even talking about here, have you ever heard of a geriatric elf showing advanced age?
Also why is it the only pointless multi-piece figure in HQ? (the mercenaries/man-at-arms dudes can change to cool different weapons via a slot and the larger gargoyles and ogres who clearly had separate parts because of flatter sprue shape to prevent breakage and molding costs I assume)The grandma elf sorceress gets...a single, easily lost tiny ugly head. Why was it multi-part again? Can anyone conceive of any reason beyond tilting the head to the side for snarky comments?
Ironically Sinestra is probably the most valuable figure hard to replace from the vintage game.

The female elf figure isn't bad per se, but that stupid tiny weapon does ruin it. Give her a sword for pity sake! Especially considering her stats are equal to the elf. In contrast, the elf warrior and elf archer are magnificent figures and look superb painted. Giant wolves are cool.

I couldn't figure out why the female barbarian had an armored cod piece, seemed rather unnecessary... but a cool figure none-the-less.
The bearded Ice gremlin was strange considering all other games workshop greenskin sculpts are entirely hairless (as orcs and goblins should be in my opinion), and an icicle is a strange weapon of choice rather than a no alternative improvised weapon.
I love the yeti (perfect, looks like a Star Wars Wampa or snow beast yeti from Disney's Matterhorn as it should) and I can live with the Polar Warbear's rather silly spikey football shoulder pads, but it makes them look like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles villain.

The ogres included in the Horde are a tad more punk looking rather than fantasy; mohawks and knuckle dusters look better in a Mad Max apocalyptical future setting like Necromunda rather than the Old World/HQ, but I can live with it and the similarly mohawked Chaos Archers found in HQ's sister game Battlemasters also by Milton Bradley/GW.
All of the concept mock up 4-up sculpts for the never released North American dwarf quest were awful in my opinion. Glad the figures themselves never saw the shelves even though it is truly tragic a dwarf expansion wasn't released. My eyes just teared up a little although the Kellar's Keep is pretty much a dwarf expansion without new monsters or solo questing. Gotta think that the mock up sculpts had an effect on the decision making there.

I can see why someone brought up the jester Orc shaman, the other wizards of Morcar are better.

The original HQ box figures are perfect in every detail. Masterpieces. All of them. I love the Old World Empire style mercenaries available in Advanced quest HQ or the expansions too.

we all know deep down in our souls that the orc bard is the stupidest new sculpt for HQ2021 according to all accounts with the yoga druid a distant second. No need for polling.

Never thought the man-at-arms were ugly. Maybe just a bit tiny.
