A Letter from Mentor

Postby Spookyhappyfun » December 22nd, 2021, 1:17 am

I can't remember who, but someone had a brilliant idea to send letters to all of their players before the first quest as a sort of invitation to the game. It basically included the introductory stories from Mentor and Zargon in the main books, explaining the backstory and how to play as well as a very brief synopsis of why the game was great (though no mention of the brode sode).

I loved that idea, but I had edited the text in my introductory stories to work for my particular game, so I had had it saved on my computer for the past couple years meaning to try to reproduce a version of it at some point.

I'm preparing for a new game with some folks, so I finally got around to recreating it, and added to it the map of the Old World from the back of the UK Witch Lord book.

I figured I'd share here in case anyone was interested.

Fantastic. In recent years I've tried to do more reading of this type before the campaign begins and having it all together like this in a nice handy reference without having to flip pages is pretty cool.

Thanks! It'll hopefully also be helpful for characters to have as reference that they can go back to for major characters' names and the very basic world map, if they are interested enough to actually read it. Plus I know that getting actual physical letters and notes like this would make me more excited to play a game. Hopefully it will for them too.

Nice to see you back, it’s been a minute.

It can be difficult to keep everyone’s attention as you read through the long openings. This is nice having them read through it on their own timeframe and get them excited to start playing.

Thanks! It’s been a long couple years for sure, but I’m hoping to get back into playing in the new year so I imagine I’ll be posting a bit more.

I know that there’s a lot of exposition in HeroQuest and very little natural discovery of things or dialogue, but reading all of that to people while they just sit waiting to play is really a lot. And I feel like anytime you can give people physical things in role playing games, it generally helps them get more excited and helps with immersion.
