To paint, or not to paint, that is the question.

I'm sure a lot of us painted, or at least tried to paint, our old Heroquest miniatures; however, for those of you who purchased the newly released HeroQuest or who are new to the game, do you plan on painting your miniatures? I'm on the fence since I have other game systems and wonder whether it would be better to leave the miniatures in their default colors than in various stages of incomplete painting.

I painted 3 of my 4 sets of the originals. I will not be painting the new set.

If they release it in stores I will get a copy and paint it. But this kickstarter set will languish in the back of my closet only too see the light of day for special games when my brothers family come out. My regular crew will get to play with it once, then back in the closet. I already have my china hutch filled with painted mini's, both official and home printed. (Got a Chaos Wizard with Gargoyle wings. Looks pretty tight.)

To me it's the furniture that looks to need painting the most (the half coardboard furniture had a lot of colors, after all), whereas the character miniatures I'm not so sure about.

It is tempting to give the female heroes a shade of blue (and "Mentor" midnight blue) and the Bard a shade of green to match the monsters.

Despite the cool factor of having the Witch Lord as undead color, he feels more natural as gray to me. Ditto for Sir Ragnar.

If I did paint the characters, somehow I would want to retain at least a tribute to the plastic colors, so the Wizard would have a red cloak, etc. Maybe the Barbarian would have a "bloody edge" to his sword.

Or I could just leave the bases as bare plastic to retain the color coding. It's tempting to convert them all into square bases.

I guess the base colors were part of the nostalgia of the original but since I have no such nostalgia for these new designs, something is lost by painting them up all fancy, like. Still undecided overall if I had to choose.

Of course my set hasn't arrived yet, so who knows if I'm evening keeping it for myself or gifting it to another. A friend who was holding my spare classic set wants to mail that to me, so I'll have more sets than I know what to do with at a certain point, even if I am curious about the new content.

They look quite bogger than the standar figures so they are also esier to paint for my eyes.

As I have multiple sets of each HQ game, quest packs and the new Hasbroquest set I usually paint one set and leave the other boardgame style, so I voted for both. However, the flimsy bendy new figures I probably will not paint I don't think they will take paint well, besides my painting backlog is far longer than I have years left to live I'm sure anyway

I see I am not alone in that regard.

The worst part is I have to restrain myself from buying new mini's.

Hell most of them will likely never see use. But I still want more.

They don't look any bendier than Reaper Bones minis, which are quite paintable (whether the stiffer "black" versions or the original "white" versions), so I don't think there will be any issue, unless you store them in the trays (pulling the out could cause paint to rub off).

I too am torn between the single color board game style and prettied up versions.

I had the opposite impression, although not due to the size. They seem to be more detailed than the original models (ex: the scythe skeleton has armor and straps, etc.), so I would expect them to take more time to paint. At least they aren't overwrought like many of GW's current models.

Yeah, I have something like 1,800 minis in the queue and I tend to paint about 60 a year at best.

I did see some people on BGG do a sundrop method that looked pretty good. Satin varnish to prime, quick zenithal from above, then one wash and one drybrush. No attempt at details or more than one color per mini. Makes the details pop at a distance at least.
