Against the Ettin King

The other day we played some Homebrew

I have this miniature that is a 3 Headed Ettin and the heads are Larry, Curly and Moe. I call him "The Ettin 'La-mo-cur".

This monster rolled Yellow Dice (if you have them, if not give the beast an extra Dice to attack).
Larry and Curly both control an arm and attack with 3 Dice
Moe in the middle has the ability to cast a chaos spell on round 1 and every other round after that. I gave him Destroy Equipment 1-3 Items, Fire Storm (and I never had a chance to draw a 3rd card as the Ettin died)
The beast has 5 Body Points, Mind is 1/6/2 Any Sleep Spell cast at the Etiin can only effect the head it is aimed at, of course any damage to the Ettin wakes a sleeping head.
Defend is 5 Dice
Move is 5.

He has a brother with just 2 heads called Laurel/Oly
Each head controls an arm. Each Arm may attack with 4 Dice (Black Dice may be rolled to attack if available without a Defend requirement)
Defend with 4 Dice
Body 4 Mind 3/2
Move 6

It was a good game, even though I only killed their Scout, I did make them burn through a lot of their accumulated heals and courage potions and the Elixir of Life the Wizard had been holding for a long time. Hey it was either use it or the Barbarian was dead meat. :D

That is beastly. Sounds like a ton of fun.

Is there a backstory for the use of magic? Typically Ettin are not very bright.

Two's Company, Three's a Crowd

. . . Well, Laurel, this is another fine Quest you've gotten us into!

There is no backstory beyond I have the three head ettin with the 3-Stooges heads.

I figured I would make Moe a Chaos Caster as he otherwise has no place other than shtick otherwise. Also he was the brains of them dudes so why not.

This was the second time that my brother went into the Ettin Dungeon to kill La-mo-cur. The first time he and his party were sent packing by a spell casting mummy who rolled out 6 Orcs on a summons spell and they discovered a couple more greenskins trying to kite the orcs. They ended up running away.

First go around the heroes never found the ancient armory or the ettin king. The second try they found the armory and that gave them the moxie needed to fight the ettin. (Weapons that roll Purple Dice, Armor that adds +1 Purple Dice, a whole satchel of scrolls...)
But we play hard core mode HeroQuest. So the first go around was not a fluke.

They tend to fail or flee 1/2 - 2/3 the time on with the occasional win streak in their favor. When they do pull it off there are high fives all around and you can see the jubilation across the table. But then they know how hard surviving my dungeons can be. :)

Also the second go around I couldn't draw a Mummy Card when a wandering monster was triggered. (yeah we do it different around this table)
