Ways to incorporate a 1D20 into HeroQuest?

Hello all! I have recently been scouring the Inn for topics on this but have come up rather short. I did find a topic where a hero reduced to Zero BP would roll for some type of permanent injury, but I was thinking more along the lines of initial character creation, or initiative per quest or fight etc.

Some thoughts I had were to have the heros roll for starting stats, like DnD, which enable them the ability to wield certain weapons or armor (Battle axe requires x strength, Long Bow needs x dexterity, etc.) Has anyone experimented with this or have any thoughts on this could work to expand the complexity while not going too complex? Anything you could provide would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

DnD has a lot more stats and reference tables, so a 1D20 makes more sense than in HeroQuest.
If you just wish to use it in HQ you can use for movement or for special custom rules.
for a random generated character, you can use it too, but you should try to make a balanced character (for example the sum of body and mind points is usually 10)

You could also use it for some custom marketplace events like in Warhammer Quest. Don't use it for game deciding die rolls, they are so unbalanced normally that you wouldn't want it.

Why a D20? Seems like you have a solution and are trying to find a problem to apply it to. I've used a D20 to roll on a treasure table instead of using cards, but I was really just trying to replicate the original HQ as closely as I could without printing too much and there were just over 20 cards in the treasure deck.

Randomly generated characters tend to be too uneven. It works okay in DnD because you roll for six characteristics so they tend to even out over the whole (although I insist on using the standard values) but Heroquest only has two. Body tends to be used for anything physical, so that would be both strength and dexterity (and constitution), while Mind covers the others.

It would probably be easier to cut parts from DnD until it is as simple as you want it rather than the other way round. HQ just doesn't have all the supporting structure for anything in DnD beyond the movement, and even that is different.

Why adding another kind of die when you have that awesome system? Beginner's mistake...

Check the link in my signature for my custom rule book, I have used a D20 plus others in it so it might give you some ideas.
