Is there really an anniversary edition, and if so, when is it expected to be out? Also, would that make all the older Editions less useful / valuable? Or is this some sort of big inside joke on the internet that I am coming privy to?

Yes. Probably never . . . or another year. Classic Hero Quest can never be fully replaced because of places like the Inn. It has become a sad kind of joke because of its delayed release. Will it ever come to pass? You be the judge.
