Phallic Phalanx: Monsters from behind

Postby Anderas » April 16th, 2018, 3:26 pm

What about a new EWP card that allows to set up the monsters not in the room but outside the room?

:D

Or maybe it is not an EWP card but another vehicle to allow it.
Base idea is that the movement values of monsters are rarely being used, also that the phallic phalanx is no phun.

So I am thinking about a mechanic that allows to set up the monsters not inside the room but behind the heroes. Either in sight or outside of the view, also with a nice mix of ranged weapons. If played well, they survive maybe several turns and force the heroes to move a bit from cover to cover.

I have no issue because of my combination of double-wide hallways, double doors, diagonal attacks from villains with spears, and the open door rule:
a hero opens a door by moving through it upon which he must interrupt his turn to let Morcar set up the room. One monster immediately gets to move and attack as if it were a wandering monster and only then may the hero complete his turn.

Additionally, I recently integrated this (after every attack by default!):
Scrap: After making a successful attack against an edging hero with now less than 6♥ or against an edging villain with now less than 3♥, you may move the attacked figure into an unoccupied edging square and yourself move into the square the attacked was in before. Alternatively, you may exchange squares with the attacked.

That means that even the first monster to attack after a door has been opened, gets this chance to break up a potential door blocking if lucky.

Another solution that springs to mind: monsters may, by default, attack diagonally through a door as if the attacked square were orthogonally adjacent.
Commence with the logic/fairness/realism debate and respond "Duh Muh Rulez".

Your EWP/Fate/Encounter card is a good idead though.
Two monsters per card (out of the same room) might be a good idea depending on how many such cards are in the deck proportionally. More rarely used but to greater effect.
Or one monster per card, more cards in the deck. More often used to lesser extent.

By the way, I love how my cathartic phallic phalanx post got utterly ignored in the thread I posted it, but inspired a new thread...

On a case to case basis you can deploy wandering monster traps or equip monsters with crossbows. Of course this doesn't fix the problem in general.

Generally I don't have too much of a problem. Just EWP cards plus some diagonal and some shooting monsters are enough to solve it. I just think it is another nice feat to add, making the game nicer.

I can't say i'd support 1 monster gets to move and instantly attack. Unless, it was brought about via a EW Card, Chaos Token, triggered due to 'revealing a room', to which the Cards/Tokens are only earned through no monsters being in play at the start of the EW turn.

The issue for me is seriously reduced with Goblins: Move action Move, Skeletons: Diagonal Attack

I wouldn't support changing the Quest book either, allowing to set them up outside the room. It goes against everything. The wandering Monster Card/Token takes care of this. I also like Ambush: replace the monsters of that area. Escape and Character: Upgrade a monster being placed, matching type. Be it a Spear, Shield, Bow, Champion, Chieftain, Magic User etc etc!

Simple generic spices.

A really simple fix, without adding EWP cards.

You already mentioned having monsters that shoot...crossbow...bow...sling...spear...throwing daggers...etc.

Since we're dealing with a lot of magic and such, simply add in magical traps. There could be monsters inside
the room, but once a hero steps onto the first space inside, or if a MONSTER steps onto the space, it summons
monsters outside the room as well. Surround the heroes a bit. It could possibly even summon monsters onto
spaces occupied by the heroes. Have them roll something to see if they get knocked aside and splitting them
up even further.

You could also "create" secret doors that are not found or able to be opened from outside the room. Once a
hero opens the door and blocks the door, a monster can pop the secret door open and run out to meet the
other heroes.

Another, not quite so simple fix - double-wide doors. Not sure how easily this would work with all layouts,
but I'm sure it could work fine for a few. And, it would make sense...think about some of the monsters.
Fimirs are supposed to be bigger creatures...double wide doors to accommodate them would not be
totally out of the question.

Instead of allowing monsters to be set up outside a room, you could have a sitiation like the 1st quests in KK and RotWL, where adjacent rooms get activated by ambush and the monsters can run out and attack from the rear. In RotWL it's not set up well, but in principle it's a nice feature.

Alongside EW cards speeding up play, monsters with ranged weapons and spears, the odd double-door and an occasional rust spell, the Phallic Phalanx is a lot more flaccid than it could be.

Double-Spaced doors are already here :-)
I use them, but not very often. I feel it exaggerated with most of the rooms. Boss rooms, pre-boss-rooms and one or two other rooms get it, though. Where I see it fit.

Does anybody have the picture of the wondering monster there?
The photobucketgate killed it, apparently.
