I am planning on doing away with the pad to write on. Already have equipment cards created to help with that. I also plan on getting a bunch of chits made to represent gold MP and BP. So to get an idea of how many chits I need to have, as a player what is the most you have had at one time of:
a: Gold
b: mind points:
c: body points
thx

The most Body and Mind Points Heroes of ours have ever had is 11 of each. Gold is probably about 5000.

11 sounds about right for body points. Barbarian has the most at the start at 8, increased to 10 for the Frozen Horror, he might get a temporary boost or two from a spell or something, for a grand total of 11 or 12.
I wouldn't want to ever give a hero anything more than that, or they would be tougher than, like, a dragon.

Do you really play that many games in 1 night that holding gold would be important?

I am doing the same thing and my objective is to not write anything down. When I played Silver Tower I just dumped each player into a zipper bag at the end of the night and I loved it. I want the same for HQ and less than $5 in mini cards will do that for me. My players pool their gold so I don't need too many cards to make it work.
I also find that scrolls and potions are often forgotten about when written down. But if you have the card in front of you, you are more likely to remember and use it.
Admittedly the gold and Mind points are the least work. But that''s where I am.

So how do potions work exactly? Can a player have more than one of the same potion if they got the gold to do so? Or can multiple players buy the same potion? Trying to figure out how many of each potion card I should get printed.

I play that there are unlimited numbers of potions. Meaning different players may have the same potion, and they can have as many of them as they can afford to buy (bear in mind that potions from the alchemists shop are very expensive). There are no limits stated in the rules so I see no reason to impose any on my players.
Personally I don't like the idea of having physical items for everything that is owned, when a quick tally on a character sheet does the job. Sure you can forget you have something if it's written down, but if you have scores of cards in front of you it's just as easy to get swamped and have the same problem.

What Pancho said. +1!
The included character sheets aren't very good, all versions. So I redesigned the entire thing and came up with quite a good system. The last season we played the Heroes loved adding their own motos, banners etc, even wrote out small stories on the rear, i added a huge scroll as the entire back. At first we we're using scrap paper but it got very messy, which is what led me to come up with the unique way the sheet works. It's so simple and at the table it flows.
A huge part of Heroquest was the creativity it encouraged rather than just a game, I like to keep that and amplify it to the players. You can really tell if they're into it by how they interact with their sheet. What level they go to on their own back story. The game isn't just moving about the board.

Good points.
Just doing a goggle image search with the words "Heroquest character sheet" comes up with tons of great sheets that are in my opinion improvements on the original. I once went into a frenzy and printed off scores of copies of multiple different types. They've all come in very useful, one for the official game, another for more involved fan-made stuff, one where all 4 heroes are on one sheet and the DM keeps tally, and yet another for solo games.

Interesting thought process. I never considered that. I still plan on printing all the equipment cards as I am essentially printing every card for the base and all the expansions in one run so won't really cost much more to make all the equipment cards as well. Still have not found anyone locally that has any interest in playing yet so this may be all in vain.
