Tile consolidation

Postby phoenixcinder » March 23rd, 2018, 2:06 pm

Quest books are prepped for print. Most of the cards are as well.

Now working to prep all the tiles for print.

Some questions regarding the following common tiles:
Falling Block
Blocked Square
Pit trap
Secret Door
Skull Tiles

How many of each of these do I realistically need?

Like for example if I was to print off all the tiles from all of the expansion sets. I'd have an additional 22 skull tiles, atop of the 16 that come in the base set. Do I really need 38 skull tiles?

What is the most of each of those 5 staple tiles listed above you have ever had to use in one game?

Falling Block - none; the mechanism makes it a blocked square after triggering. There is no status for which you'd need an extra tile
Blocked Square - 18
Double Blocked Square - 6 (or 30 single blocked ones instead of 18)
Pit Trap - 12
Secret Door - 12
Skull Tiles - I don't know, 60? 40? 30 could also suffice

I'd estimate that's three sheets letter size or something?
Maybe a little too much, but better safe than sorry. You can build some interesting quests equipped with that amount.

The base game delivers much less: 0/8/2/4/6/0
RotWL and KK add approximately: 0/10/0/6/6/0

The base game does include falling block squares in North America. When there is a cave-in the result is an irregular mess of stone, which is different than a blocked square tile.

The other thing to keep in mind is that the tiles in the base game are double sided, so skull tiles are only ever just one side. If you print everthing you need with a skull on the back, then you will be more than all set. If you put secret doors on the back of some, then you can find yourself looking for a tile which is underneath a tile you've already placed.

We only use the skull tiles when there is a problem accounting for body points, so usually just for bosses. And we line the damage up on the corner of the board.

We also seem to have no trouble remembering who searched which room... Your milage on the skull tiles may vary.

Can anyone confirm if they are double sided for any of the expansions?

KK and RotWL are one-sided. EQP and BQP are two-sided.

There is no tile before it is found. When it is found (trap search), the EWP points at the square, still no tile. When it is triggered it becomes a blocked square.
@Whitebeard, how is it functionally different from a blocked square? I think it's a matter of taste if you need different tiles for that.

As far as I'm concerned you don't need a falling block tile as you don't need a spear trap tile. Same thing...

In regards to EQP and BQP are even the large tiles double sided? I am guessing WOZ is double sided too then?

Why do you need so many details? If you do blocked square and skull double sided or not is a matter of taste. I think it is a good idea.

Also if you want rubble and blocked square tiles different from each other is a matter of taste. Your taste, your decision.

If you ask a professional printer, I would go ahead and directly include some creative traps like Daedalus water filled pit trap. You don't need them in the official quests, however, KK and ROTWL both are not as good as some custom stuff you find here in the forums, so better prepare to have them there.

This shows both sides of the tiles. Even the large tiles are two-sided.
AtOH are also two-sided. WoM are one-sided.
