What the heck is this thing?

Some days you get bored and decide to just cruise around the internet looking for random HeroQuest-related stuff and you come across something that stops you in your tracks. Something like this:



According to the page, this supposedly came with someone's copy of Return of the Witch Lord?!

The site is essentially just someone re-remembering the game from his childhood and posting information about it. But the structure in this picture is something I've never seen before anywhere.

Anyone have any thoughts about what it could be or what it might have been from originally?

Oh my god. I've been sitting on this thing for months completely unsure about it. I finally get around to posting it here and then, less than an hour later, it hits me.

It is weird that they covered it with item tiles from Mage of the Mirror. Wonder what that's about.

Also, I'm thinking now that it might be fun to use something like that big structure on the board for some 3d fun once in a while. I might need to look into getting some 3d rooms and things. The furniture is fun, but why not something more and bigger.

Oh yeah, I recognize that. That IS from Dark World.

After our first copy of HeroQuest fell into disrepair, our cousin gave us what remained of his game, Dark World. We still had a couple figurines and furniture pieces left from HeroQuest and Battle Masters, so my brother and I combined them and later built our own board using plywood and a small table. We named it "Dark Quest".

The heroes had to find weapons, kill monsters and collect gold, cross a bridge guarded by Ogres, hitch a ride on the Millennium Falcon (paying with the gold they collected), which takes them to the top of the small table, infiltrate the enemy castle and destroy the evil Wizard... we probably wouldn've enjoyed Hero Quest had we gotten it later in life...
