How I customized HQ as a kid

Postby Jafazo » March 27th, 2017, 9:07 pm

Wondering if anyone else did this, if so, what did you do?

I can't remember how old I was, I was young, probably around 11. I traced one treasure card onto the back of an index card, cut that out, then used that as the size template to create other cards. I remember I used the blank side for the picture and description, then on the lined side I drew a simple image and denoted whether it was a chaos spell, artifact etc. It's so funny cause it was simple but worked so well. I'll try to list some of the things I created that I can remember...

Spell Book - This was an artifact and if you had it you could cast 3 unique spells. I think the spells were a teleporting spell, aaaand I forget the rest.

Fork Tremor - This one I remember. You could clap this fork against a wall or solid rock tile and that tile or rock would crumble and be removed from the game.

I'd made a bunch of spells based off the Shining in the Darkness series for Sega Genesis including DeSoul (instant Hero kill if you failed a MP type check), Blast, Blaze etc. I made some kind of bubble spell that gave the Wizard a few temporary HP.

I made so many things for this game it's crazy. I made tons of quests and even made a different kind of game using Hero Quest where Heroes start on one side, monsters on another, and two players go head to head in a battle mode type game.

If anyone's familiar with the Shining in the Darkness series I incorporated a lot of elements from it including herbs, the angel feather etc.
Unless you specify your version I'm going by the US rules.

I think I just met a kindred soul.... HeroQuest and the Shining series (if you never played Shining Force or Shining Force 2, go back and play them now!).

Modding HeroQuest was what first sparked my passion for game design. I expanded the armory, and moved the Elf spells into three new "schools" of three (I had to add one). Then I added other spells. It was a ton of fun. I plan on taking those changes and making a real project out of it very soon. With any luck, yall will hear about it in the next few months.

I just found some of my OLD cards that I'd made as a kid, hah. The art is so cheesy LoL. I'm gonna have to post them sometime for a few laughs.

Do it. We can bring them in to this century.

I was in my early 20s when HQ came out. I bought it all (except that which wasnt available in Aus) and played with my girlfriends kids, as they were too young for proper ADnD.

Wish I'd kept it all instead of leaving it for them when we split up. Saved me a whole lot of cash.

My first mod was adding some material to a Goblin to make a thief.
Pretty much the same thing I did again, but I painted this one red to match player miniatures. And made a proper card.

Oh the things we do when we're young!

A bit like Mighty Warriors. But this had the added mechanic in placing the rooms, a game with initself, where you'd be initially planning out strategy. Your plans could be foiled when it came to placing doors. Each player would take turns placing a room, then take turns placing a door.

I turned my Advanced Heroquest into a Mighty Warriors set by simply buying the rooms (could easily print) and drawing the Hit and Miss table on the inside of the lid (12 instead of 9). It's the same miniatures in both sets. I was always going to make new teams using HQ minis but haven't got round to it yet.

@Jafazo
That's great you can remember some of your Hero Quest golden age. Posting a selection of your hand-drawn cards sounds like a fun idea.
