Alternate games on large scale

Postby MadMickyG » February 24th, 2017, 10:47 pm

Hey all,

I have been looking at all the miniatures I have for HQ, trying to think of a a large scale single run game to play. Probably on my big outdoor board, or the other side, if I can create another type of board area.

Thinking something like Risk crossed with HQ or Warhammer without being full-blown Warhammer.

I have a 50x32 square playing area, or 2 25x32 square areas. Want something that takes some time, but doesnt take as long as a HQ quest.
Even the short quests we do, with only two of us can take a couple of hours, more so if its all the kids.

Racking my brain to try and create something thats fun and entertaining, that can have two players, or all 4 of us.

I will count up all my pieces and add them here. I really want to create something that is both epic and new-ish. And most of all fun!

Have a large stash of pieces that the kids dont really want to play anymore, now the wife doesn't work the weekends anymore!

Ready to hand out thinking caps!!

I have a couple of ideas...but not HQ related at all.

1 - Have you ever heard of Triopoly? It is Monopoly, except with three boards, that is....two smaller boards inside the
regular sized board. Of course, this game TAKES FOREVER, unless you don't care about really finishing...you could
just add up whoever has the most money and property at the end, whenever you decide to stop.

2 - I've been developing a fantasy version of Battleship. I could put it all together for you, and you give it
a try...be my guinea pig, I suppose. Now...before you decide on this...all I have are the rules and a basic-type
board for you to print off. There is absolutely nothing fancy to look at...none at all. But, it could be fun, maybe.
I haven't play-tested it at all. It is just an idea I had before and I ran with it and made the rules and instructions
and such. BUT...if you were interested, I'd be happy to send it off to you.

3 - Ever heard of the Munchkin card game? It is an amazingly fun game to play, and they have all sorts of different
sets to play - regular munchkin (with something around 9 or 10 expansion sets), Munchkin Booty (pirates), Munchkin
Bites (gothic, werewolves, vampires, etc), Super Munchkin (superhero stuff), Star Munchkin (space stuff)...and others.

4 - Ever heard of a card game called Fluxx. Another amazingly fun game to play, and they have a few expansions or
alternate sets that you can buy to play. They even have a Fluxx OZ game, if I remember correctly.

I reckon a HQ style Battleship could work. Thanks Torilen.

Feel free to send me the stuff you have. Happy to play test it.

As we did with Skylanders, we made our own stuff to use them other than what they were intended for. AS they cost a load and would stop being used after a while.

We had a progressive game too, where you traveled around a board, landing on squares. We rolled dice, and if you were lucky, you fought a Skylander. To progress to the next level, you had to defeat one of each of the elements (there are 11 in total now) Each level had a tougher type class to defeat, until you got to the final level, where you faced a giant. Kids enjoyed it, until the competitive ones lost.

Also thinking of a Checkers style game perhaps. Could have Goblins to start, which become Orcs after a time (like reaching other side), then Fimirs, then Chaos Warriors. each piece has more functionality than the last.
Would need to match the other side too, using players.

Also, just realised, I could have a 25x64 size map too if I want.

You could do some sort of stealth / monster maze game where your objective is to invade, steal, and escape and not really to engage every/any monsters. Maybe try something like this?

Use an entry level elf as a thief/rogue and place EU style 1BP monsters EVERYWHERE. Ideally you would use a LARGE hand drawn Labyrinth. Maybe the board from "Dungeon!" would work? Or go without a board and use blocks (the Crossbows & Catapults castle wall bocks are cool), etc.

EWP randomly moves the 5 nearest monsters to the hero on his turn (you want the game to move along fast).
- On each turn EWP rolls to see which direction each of these 5 monsters is facing. Then EWP may move them up to 3 spaces in that direction (turning in corridors if they bend a single direction).
- On each turn EWP may select one of these 5 monsters (before rolling for its direction) and choose the direction it faces. This figure may NOT be moved this turn (unless it sees the hero as noted below).

- If a monster moves such that it can "see" the player, then it may move and attack per its normal stats. If the hero was NOT facing this direction (e.g. the back half of the figure faces the monster the whole time it approaches, then the hero rolls no defend dice.

The hero rolls 2d6 as usual. If the hero closes the distance to a monster facing the wrong direction, it is silently back-stabbed and immediately removed from the board without rolling combat.

If at any time during the hero's turn, he enters the line of sight of a new monster (front 180 degrees), the hero's turn is immediately ended.

At the conclusion of the hero's turn the hero pawn may be put at any angle so as to avoid a surprise monster attack.
Has resigned from the forum and would delete his account if he could.

Mighty Warriors. Draw a Hit and Miss table inside the lid of a game. I did it on the inside of Advanced Heroquest as it's the same minis, bought the game tiles/rooms off ebay added to the set. Create new teams with better balance. Undead team, Orc Team, Empire team etc.

Print off some rooms.

Check out Lionheart and adapt the simple rules to your map and figure collection. It plays fast as a simple, chess- like battle game.
