How many Heros?!

Hello - sorry a bit of a newbie question but I was wondering how many Heros you would recommend playing with for a 2 player game... both players (including me haven't played before but have played other GW games such as warhammer, space hulk, space crusade and bloodbowl. What are the pros and cons of using more Heros - does it make it too easy if you play with more for example.

Sorry I'm sure this must have been asked before but I couldn't find a search function for the board.

Thanks :)

If you are really familiar with the game I would have them play 2 heroes and cut down the number of monsters in the dungeon.

If you are not experienced enough to feel comfortable altering the game in any way then have them play 2 heroes each.

The quests are designed with 4 heroes in mind for the most part. Now you certainly don't need all 4 heroes for all quests. But the more the merrier eh?

Now if the players are die hard gamers with plenty of dungeon crawl experience then let them try it with just a pair of heroes. Now one real issue with just a pair of heroes is the limitations it places on the group. Very few pairs would run the Wizard and Elf or the Barbarian and Dwarf as their teams. Usually we pair a warrior with a spell caster, for good reason. But with out both spell casters in play the arcane support is limited...without both warriors in play the smack down is limited.

I much prefer the 2 heroes per player in your situation.

I'm mostly with cynthialee here.
The game is designed with 4 heroes in mind. If you want to run the official quests unaltered, aiming for 4 heroes would be the most optimal.

However some players, including myself, prefer to just control a single hero. It's easier, less confusing and makes it more personal in a way.
Ask you players what they prefer.

Using more heroes would result in the monsters getting overwhelmed.
Also the amount of treasure per hero is reduced, meaning that the individual hero will wait longer to buy equipment, which honestly is a big part of the drive.

Also, just to be clear...
When you say 2 players; do you mean 2 hero-players and yourself as the Evil Wizard = 3 players?
Or is it you and one hero-player?

For limited players when you want to introduce an NPC hero I use this mechanism...
"NPC" characters start the game under the control of player 1. Player 1 takes their turn, the NPC's turn then they pass the dice to the next player as usual.
Once it becomes the EWP the NPC is passed on to player 2. After the EWP takes his turn Player 1 takes their turn then passes dice to Player 2, who then takes his turn then the turn of the NPC. When it becomes the EWP turn, then Player 2 gives player 3, (or player 1 in the case of just 2 players) the NPC and play is carried on in this fashion until the end of the game.

Commentary: This provides the players with added firepower while not leaving the NPC in the hands of a single player, where it becomes that players actual character.
As the NPC is passed back and forth between players it is more difficult for a single player to use the NPC as their lackey.

Do you mean too easy with more than four heroes? Yes it would be, you'd need to improve the monsters. Monster Skills: viewtopic.php?f=38&t=3284 would do it and/or increased BPs. It would be to hard with less than four. Not so much to start with be later on.

That would only work if the heroes work together, completely together. I think NPCs should be followers under the control of one hero like men-at-arms, otherwise it could get silly if they don't work together. Working together can be encouraged but it should be forced. Besides, that's really a separate thing from the amount of regular heroes.

I live to see silly.
If they want to split up and have the NPC doing bizarre behavior because they can't agree...then so be it.

That would be funny if both the heroes were magicians fighting for the NPCs control, not so much otherwise because it wouldn't really make sense.

Hey, thanks for the replies. It's just me and one other player at this point - so if I was evil he'd have 4 heros. I was thinking that this would be ok as other friends may turn up on future occasions and take control of one or more of the heros as they develop...

Hey Jonny,

If just two of you really want to play, and you want to play with the supplied quest book, your friend will have to play all four heroes. If you get just one more friend in the mix--in my experience, at least--the game becomes much more fun, as each player can take a fighter and a spell caster, and the "us versus the Evil Wizard" dynamic that is so important for the game really takes off.

Still, if the two of you are excited to play, the game will certainly reward you.

Happy questing!
