It starts again! But...

[This topic was moved from the Saturday Night DUNGEON! room on 5/5/16.]

On Friday night I'm dusting off the old Hero quest board and I'm hosting my first game in about 5 years! To say I'm excited is slightly an understatement! However I have a slight dilemma – a couple of the guys who are playing were that of the original game all those years ago (Who have completed almost all the first quest) A couple of others a complete newbies! I really don’t want to start all over again as I would like to move on to the other extension packs (I have all 4 UK extensions, including adventure design kit and have made my own quest).

So…is it ok to pick up where we left off (possibly leaving the new guys a little under powered) or should I re-start from the beginning? Or should I start one of the extension quests, if so any preferences on which one would be a good quest as an introduction? Just so you’re aware my own designed quest plays after all the other quests have been done so I really don’t want to start mine yet.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Also I was planning on using some of the spells/treasure from the other extension packs – would this be advisable?

New Heroes.
Decide power level.
Issue out gear to match the power level.
Any of the very first quest maps they played will be far from memory, change the mission goal and shuffle around a monster or more and change the furniture so it is not the same and rock it out.

Depends on how much questing you expect these guys to stick around for.
If you expect them to do a whole lot of questing, I'd say let the new players get the whole experience from scratch. The old players probably don't even remember their characters.
If it's a limited amount, let the oldies continue from where they left off. Be generous with treasure for the new guys to get them up to speed fast.

The consensus seems to be that RotWL is the funnier of the two first expansions, so that might be the one to go for if you decide to continue where you left.

But ask the players how they want to go about it...

I would try to get the guys to play different characters every quest. We also rotate Zargon a little bit.

I know this isn't in exactly the correct thread but can anyone tell me how many quests you must complete to become a champion? And is this the highest level you can reach?

You become a Champion after making 14 posts on this forum. ;P

In vanilla Hero Quest, the Heroes are dubbed Champions at the conclusion of the base system Quest Book. actually, this is incorrect, see GK's next post This distinction carries no in-game reward.

However, Jacob Busby posted a set of supplemental rules detailing Heroic advancement many years ago. The progression goes Hero (0-2 Quests completed) -> Champion (3-5 Quests) -> Veteran (6-9 Quests) -> Knight (10-19 Quests) -> Legend (20+ Quests).

Phoenix had a different progression of rankings, which went Hero (0-5 Quests completed) -> Champion (6-12 Quests) -> Veteran (13-20 Quests) -> Knight (21-30 Quests) -> Legend (31+ Quests). You can read about them in his Imperial Academy rules supplement.

In practice, the ranks and titles of seasoned Heroes are unlikely to affect the gameplay unless you start adding material such as Combat Cards, Men-at-Arms, rank-locked armory shops, etc.

This is not true...?!
You become a champion after completing "three tasks" as per Mentor's introduction in the beginning of the quest book.
in my opinion this translates as completing the first three quests.

You are right in that it has no actual meaning in-game. It's pure flavor.

Damn it! I knew I had read that somewhere but I couldn't find the text in the rulebook. I knew it had to be some time before Kellar's Keep, though, since the ending text refers to the Heroes as Champions there. Consider me duly corrected.
