Sounds like an odd past-time really.

Anyway, from my experience, the most delicate piece of HQ scenery are rats and candles. I've actually splurged and bought some 'mint' rats and candles to replace my old.

Of course, now comes the worry of breaking these new ones. Keeping them attached to the furniture seems abit risky, at least without some sort of good storage for the whole furniture piece. Separate seems ok, in a small zipbag and stored in a safe place, but I feel each time I'm pushing the pieces back into the furniture or popping them out again I'm gonna slip and break something.

Any clever solutions?

Yeah, don't remove the pieces after use!
Find a box to store furniture separately. Or make a foam insert to go in your HQ box.

One of my original rats never made it into any of the furniture. He/she got put into an old slota base and kind of became a character that just ambient moves around the board, and has remained that way ever since. I did think about giving it some friends, but the the warhammer quest rats were a bit weird looking, the same for the citadel rats for the skaven pack rats. Gw opting for weird centaur mutant ratties and such. So my favorite rat model ever made has remained lonely except for its pals on the furniture!!!

Those always scare seven shades of *lemony goodness* out of me. I have a rat base with one of those on it. I wanna get rid of it but don't wanna touch it.
Now it sits in my bitzbox and I can feel its haunting stare. I swear it hates the other bitz, too.

I'd say you want a looser fit for your rats and candles that can more safely be removed with finesse. Perhaps a bit of oil on the pegs will require less force to remove. If your not averse to modifying the pieces, you could instead file/sand down the pegs a bit or enlarge the holes with a pin drill or hobby blade. Of course, you'd have to be careful not to overdo it--lots of test fits are needed as you reduce the material. Disclaimer: I have't tried any of this!
