Help for a Noob

Postby 2Many Hobbies » May 6th, 2015, 3:53 am

I recently managed to get hold of a copy of Heroquest, but upon opening the box I discovered that I had no rules, cards, dice or hero sheets, but did have a whole heap of extra monsters.
As the game is unplayable in its current state I was thinking the best course of action would be to sell on the figures and furniture (and board and gm screen and box) and use the proceeds to get more games BUT, I have no idea what these figures are worth, I see the listings on eBay but imagine they are somewhat inflated. Could you good folk clue me in as to what I have and how much I should be looking to sell it on for.

The minis are all in this album http://imgur.com/a/0mseJ#0 and there is a load of card pieces (staircases, tombstones, rubble, rooms and the such) which I haven't photographed, but can add to the album if folk think it's worth doing.

Ok, I don't know how much you paid for it, but it may have been a great bargain, given that some rare figures are in there.

The 4 blue wizards are rare figures and the come in the expansion pack "wizards of morcar". You shouldn't sell them less than $15 each.

The 3 blue and 4 reds fat guys are the ogre figures from the expansion pack "against the ogre horde". The should sell for around $60-70 total.

The green figures are from the original game but you have double quantities on each type. Probably the owner bought the expansion pack "kellar's keep" and got the extra figures from there. (8 orcs, 6 goblin, 3 fimir).

The white figures are the undead and you have triple quantities of each type because the owner had bought the expansion pack "return of the witch lord" which has 8 skeletons, 4 zombies, 4 mummies. The original game only had 4 skeletons, 2 zombies, 2 mummies.

The grey figures are just what the original game is supposed to have.

You seem to be missing only the original 4 heroes of the game.

Now, what I would suggest. Keep the rare figures (the wizards and ogres) because if you get deep into the game, you will want to have them eventually. If you don't like heroquest and get bored with it, you can sell them at any point.
From the double and triple figures, you could sell some, but to be honest I don't think you'll get that much cash. Personally, I'd buy those for figures for $1 each, or less. If you get a bunch of 8 orcs, 6 goblins, 3 fimir, 8 skeletons, 4 zombies, 4 mummies and sell them on ebay, I estimate you'd get around $35-40.
On the other hand, you can keep them and play the extra quests of the expansion pack, which sometimes have a lot of one type of monster on the board and you don't want to run out.

For the figures you need, the 4 heroes, you should be prepared to spend around $20 for the 4 of them, maybe less if you find a good deal.

The dice you can search for on ebay, can't be sure for the price but I guess you can have 4 skull dice for about $10.

The hero sheet are worthless, so don't even bother with them. Just write your progress on a piece of paper.

The rulebook and questbook are not that important, give that you can download them from this here site, and print them out yourself.

Finally, the cards can also be downloaded and printed out, but it's hard to make the of use without using the proper kind of paper or cardboard.
It would be easier to get them off ebay, for around $15 or so? I"m not so sure about that, maybe you can get a whole set cheaper.

It will also depend if you want to play the game.

You have the most important bits, it is easy to get a copy of the rules and quest books. All you need to decide is if you play the US version or the Europe version really. then download the PDF's print 'em and away you go...

I'll go ahead and add, that you have all minis there from
- one game system
- one Kellar's Keep
- one Return of the Witch-Lord
- one Against the Ogre Horde
- one Wizards of Morcar
except for one set of heroes (which you shouldn't pay more than 20 Dollars for)
and a set of 12 Men-at-Arms with 24 weapons (8/16, however, should suffice for realistic playing of the WoM quests). 8 figures and 4x4 weapons should cost not more than 25 Dollars, the full set not more than 40 bucks.

At that point, you can just as well print the other materials from the game system and the four EU expansions except for the dice. 4 combat dice are enough and should cost 10 dollars or something.
That would be my way to go here.

EDIT: After posting I read tasoe's post and what can i say. We're ticking like one again.

dude! you hit the jackpot!

Do some serious research and pause to consider carefully if you are going to sell these mini's. You will not likely ever find these mini's in such a deal again.
Personally...I would keep them. I would print off any materials that you do not have already and play some serious games.

Even if these mini's are not used for HQ, they would make a wonderful addition to any High Fantasy style game system and will be quite the bragging item and a conversation starter.

I advise you to keep them, keep them in good condition and save them against a rainy day.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

I'd like to add that the rare models (the 4 wizards and ogres) seem to be in good condition, nothing bent or broken off and unpainted. very nice..

Yes indeed. Keep them, print the rulebooks/quests from this website, and print the cards (I did this as well). There are topics here with both NA and EU versions of all the cards, and I also made a set of EU style cards with NA items, plus additional items from expansions and homebrew stuff (as did many others here).
I recommend getting the scrolls / potions addon decks for the treasure deck, and certainly the Evil Wizard Deck. Adds a lot of fun and gameplay.

I've spent quite some time looking for those 4 wizards, so don't get rid of them lightly.
The ogres are also worthwhile, I substituted them with regular Warhammer Fantasy ogres.

The mercenaries aren't too hard to find, and as KK said, you don't need a full set.

Should you ever find a cheap set of Advanced HeroQuest (say, no more than $30,-) then get that as well! It also has 4 heroes, that have the SAME classes as the original HQ game, so you could use them instead, and the game has mercenaries as well (swordsmen w/shield, halberdiers, pikemen), so you could use those as well, and only need to find some crossbowmen and broadswordmen. Plus it has some nice oldschool skaven, that can also be used with various HQ quests.
