Minimum age for beginners?

Postby Sparkymark » March 25th, 2015, 10:34 am

I have 2 sons aged 1 and 2. My question is what age can i realisicly expect to introduce them to Heroquest?
On the box it says 10+. I'm not sure my nostalgic urge to play can wait that long. I'm sure they could get a grasp on it before then.
What ages have others introduced their kids to it?

By then they are ready to enjoy a game or two, but I would alter the rules for a child so that when you defeat a monster it surrenders and promises to be a good monster. Teaching 5 year olds killing is not a good plan in my opinion.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

in pokemon the little pokes faint so, if pokemon is still around in 4/5 years, you can relate it to that.

Or you can go Beernut's route and graphically describe the monster death to the 5 yr old.
"You split the monster from stem to stern, it falls apart in two twitching halves and spurts blood all over the floor that gets on your new boots. DAMMIT!"
Zebs of Dooooooom turned out perfectly fine. He hasn't killed the family cat at all.
"I will raise your dead body as an undead skeleton. Then I will make it do unspeakable acts. Like taking a shower." - El Flesh.

Hehe

Think of Indiana Jones. Normally the only Mass-Killer in the film is Indiana himself.

Wow, i never really considered a child could be psycologically disturbed playing Heroquest. But then many computer games involve killing things.
I was thinking more along the lines of when they'd be mature enough to get a basic understanding if the rules.

Haha....my 4 year old loves playing with it...not the game mind you. Just playing with the monsters and furniture and bits. I actually give HQ some credit for helping him to count and do basic addition. He had some difficulty at first figuring out the roll of Red Dice. Then he would count each, then he (I think) recognized the patterns on the dice, but now he can add them pretty fast. He's still too young to play a "true" game, but I can see that he's getting closer all the time and these play sessions with the equipment and I make for wonderful bonding, I often look forward to it as much as him I think.

To Cynthialees concern: I did (do) use the term kill. He's never had a physical reaction in the slightest to it (you know, hitting, kicking, maiming small animals), but it did add the word "Kill" to his daily lexicon, which I did not anticipate in advance. I had to then teach him (after an embarrassment or two) about proper use in the real world. So there's that...but if you're a parent, you have to teach your kids anyway, and at least this was *my* doing that I had to teach him about, instead of when he "learned to spit" in preschool.
