So I am really excited about almost finishing my collection. So much so I have shared it with more than a few. These young kids now days do not appreciate the simplicity of this game AT ALL!!! Too many time I have heard, "So it is like Descent but stupid?" They do not understand that without games like these in the past there would be no Descent or Galactic Empires. I am sorry that your brain must be overwhelmed for you to enjoy any kind of game you play or else it "isn't challenging enough" There was a time when playing games together was a means to enjoy each other's company and escape reality. To relax and be in your own flesh and laugh at the stupid mistakes you made in said game. No it is all about eat sleep conqure repeat. It wasn't that we had to BEAT the game. We had fun PLAYING the game. 2 different ideas intirely that by todays youth are one in the same.

Damn Kids GIt Off My LAWN!!!!!

LOL.

Has anyone had a life experiance like mine where you used to play game just to enjoy them but now it is not considered playing the game or a good game unless you can absolutely beat it every time? Or am I just Unique?

A game isn't much of a game if you can absolutely beat it every time. It would lack challenge.

I've not had a change to play any of these newer style dungeon crawlers but when I watch the youtube videos on them I always end up thinking, oh that's a silly mechanic. Lots of daft ways of implementing things that just seem to be there to add more tokens.

I'd be a much bigger fan of a slightly more advanced HQ. Not so much adding more material things but rules that enable different results from the combat dice etc. Expansion characters with new spell sets, expansion quest sets that bring in new artefacts with new special abilities, new rules. BUT the core would stay exactly the same.

What mitchiemasha wrote more or less expresses my feelings exactly.

The only other remotely similar game I've tried is Mines of Moria and to be honest using the movement ruler just annoyed me. Rolling 3d6 every time you attack (I think this is the same system used in WHQ and AHQ but I may be wrong!) felt very sterile. I'll take the good old fashioned HQ board and combat dice over that *lemony goodness* every time |_P

Strangely, my 6 year old really enjoyed it but he soon returned to HQ.

Again, this is pretty much the goal I set myself with the expansions I'm currently writing.

My eldest, who is 8, has just got to the point where he will happily play HQ, Space Crusade or X-Wing and not care if he wins or loses. He plays to enjoy playing the game, which is nice. His younger brother is still prone to fits of throwing the dice across the room and storming off in tears because his Barbarian lost 1BP (no, it doesn't matter that he still has 7BP and a potion of healing left!)

Had a kid come into my shop a little while back; Kid is about 7, maybe 8, with a very happy momma in tow. I see this kind of thing all the time so I introduce myself to her and her young man and ask how I can help them.

"I need Mario Kart."

Well, I don't sell video games, so I go through the normal action of asking him which one, that way I can at least send them in the right direction, figuring they are looking for either the newest one or the one on the Wii.

"I need the really ancient one." he says.

Ouch! I think to myself, the Super Nintendo one was back in '91-ish if I remember correctly, that's hardly 'ancient', but before I can even finish this thought though, he follows through with his finishing move:

"You know, the one on the N64!"

Now that my gaming experience from when I was his age has been happily relegated to prehistoric I tell them of some second hand video game shops in the city, wish them well, and go to get myself fitted for my walker. :zombie:

On the plus side, I have worked with so many kids over the years that I have seen plenty that grow to love game complexities and many that enjoy the reading and social aspects of it, so you never know :D

I dare say N64 Mk was definetly my favorite! Better even than the prehistoric version

Yeah I was going to put, that's why we are here. lots of my ideas have stemmed form the INN.

One is simply not a true HQ fan unless they've wrote or writing their own rule expansions.

The N64 was awesome when it first came out.

I tried explaining to someone the other day how great a game Goldeneye was. When I was at uni we used to split the feed from the N64 to 2 different TVs and then cover half of each screen so you couldn't see where your opponent was when playing multiplayer games. Playing like that with Golden Gun was a freakin' amazing buzz!

i think its simply a generation thing. heroquest for a large majority of us here was our introduction. id probably guess most of us are in our 30s. which would be about right.

HQ is now in the realms of a classic. and needs to be introduced to people. you wont see kickstarters or adverts or the likes for heroquest so its upto us to carry the flag :)

now back to the generation thing. kanye west did a song with paul mccartney recently to which some kid tweeted "i dunno who this paul mccartney is. but he's gonna be huge now"
*slaps forehead

again though its simple that classics get lost. but will be discovered, :)
