Comparing HeroQuest miniatures to Reaper Bones

Postby Renzetsu » May 18th, 2014, 11:19 am

Hello!

When I was looking for miniatures to create new characters for the game, I ran into this problem: There is only few images in the internet (that I actually found and believe me, I really, REALLY searched :D ) which shows the physical differences (I was mostly looking for the height) in miniatures compared to the original HeroQuest miniatures. I'm not that familiar with the miniature genre in general so I didn't know anything about scales or such. I measured my original HeroQuest miniatures and started to look for miniatures around that size. After some researching I found out that there are few kinds of scales when it comes to miniatures, 15mm, 25mm Heroic etc. etc. but none of those really hit the mark that I had measured my HeroQuest miniatures to be. Well, I did some more researching and I found out about Reaper Bones miniatures. These miniatures looked cool and I was thinking, could they be around the same size as the original HeroQuest miniatures? So, after MORE researching I found some pictures about Reaper miniatures and pictures about HeroQuest miniatures but I never actually found a picture where these two would be compared. I decided to order some of those Reaper Bones miniatures anyway and hoped that they would fit nicely with the original ones. And now is the time when I cut to the chase, sorry about the long prologue  My Reaper Bones finaly came and here is the end result:

So, the Reaper Bones miniatures where a bit taller than the original HeroQuest miniatures. What I did here was I grinded away some of the plastic from their bases and glued the to 20mm x 20mm square bases so that they would stand more firmly. They are still a bit taller than the original HeroQuest miniatures but I think they blend in kinda nicely (not by the color tho  ). Here is some close up comparison pictures:

Oh, I saw this dragon in the online store and I decided to order one too and try out if this dragon from Reaper Bones would fit to the game board nicely. Its standing on two 20mm x 20mm square bases so it takes 2 squares on the game board. Looks kinda cool I think!

So, the reason why I posted all this was to help others who might be strugling to find comparison pictures about HeroQuest originals and Reaper Bones. Well, here you go. Overall, I'm happy with these. It took me a while to carefully grind away some of the base plastic (If you want to know, I used Dremel drill with sand paper tip) and glue these but I'm happy with the end result. Alright, I hope this post helps someone to decide which miniatures to order to create more characters for the game.

Have fun playing! :skull: :whiteshield: :blackshield:

Welcome to the forum! Nice to see a new member already contributing so actively :)

You just received your Bones now? :o wow that's late indeed! I've also used Bones for HQ. I based them on HQ bases that I made with milliput. There's a tutorial on the forum somewhere.

I just recently got the game to my possession and I haven't got one since my childhood. So for me the Bones (or new miniatures in general) was a new thing :D I know they've been around for a while already but as I said, I just recently bought the game to myself again :) When it comes to modifying and creating miniatures I'm a TOTAL newbie  I just decided to go for it. But maybe I check those tutorials and logs you guys suggested, thanks for the tips.

Great post. Do you have any 1-square monsters to compare with?

Agreed. There's a few other threads on this but this adds to the discussion quite nicely. Thanks for going to this effort and posting it. I too had been wondering / slow to get around to getting some Reaper mini's. One day...

With the KS Bones II thing, is it a finished thing even though their funding options still have a few numbers available? With what they've done, does that mean that these minis will still be available from Reapers site?

1. Probably not. I expect a Bones 3 next year.
2. Yes, all of them and a few they already had in Bones.
