heroquest 25th anniversary (how would you of done it?)

Postby ampersand » November 23rd, 2013, 3:05 pm

ok so weve seen very little recently on this. but we have all debated on it. theories and whimsical thoughts on what we are going to be seeing. debates and debacles on how wrong it is going to be before weve even seen anything.
so if you were at the helm of creating it.....what would be your idea of the perfect anniversary release of heroquest?

Well, your writing on the topic name looks just as good as their letter from mentor.

That there would be none.
I'm all for re-creating parts and sets of parts. A set of furniture from resin. The rest we do ourselves all the time. Cards, and stuff. Boards. Rules.
Which is the reason (alongside those discussed all over the place) that there's no need (and from where I'm sitting, no want either) for a whole game.

I'm 100% with knightkrawler on this.
I can also add with a dramatic tonee that 25 years in not such an important anniversary. I would like to see expansions or add ons,
but for an anniversary themed re-release, it has to be at least 100 years. Or even better, a re-release of HeroQuest a thousand years after its first release!
Now, that's an anniversary. That's how darn significant HeroQuest is. 25 years is for people or tv-shows.

To answer ampersand's question, if I was in charge of an anniversary thing, I would have had a box that includes everything from the main game, exactly as it were in the past.
I would include something extra as well, a 5-part quest that the heroes can play and in the end they fight evil versions of themselves. I would design it in a day, and playtest it in one night, and then release it.
People would buy it anyway (me as well) so my money are guaranteed. If you think that's immoral, sue me. That's what I would have done. I would take advantage of all of you.
That's how companies should think and it's up to us to decide if we're going to buy it anyway or dismiss it.

Well, the hard part is doing it without having right/access to the original material.
Can't use text, quests, images, miniatures or even fimirs... It's a tough one.

If not for those factors I would be with tasoe. An anniversary re-release rather than remake would be sweet.
An extra quest-line, a couple of new artifacts, equipment cards and spells. Throw in a new mini for the boss in the final quest of the new quest-line and BAM!
Well... and perhaps clear up some of the ambiguities in the rulebook.

The anniversary could have been celebrated with a new quest pack too. Not necessary the fabled wizard/dwarf pack, just a cool new campaign with compatible content.
New monsters on old fashioned bases made to resemble the old style. That would have been cool too.

But really... I don't mind an actual remake. I think the new Space Hulk looks incredible. The new look is working really well, the minis are incredible and everything is super high quality.
What is wrong with HQ25 is mostly that it seems so amateurish in it's production - and I don't care for the art direction. So there, I said it.

> Brand new issue of the game using the best of the existing rules, but with more information on how to make quests repeatable more easily.
> I would have all completely new miniature sculpts, but of the same miniatures. Same appearance, but superior in detail like the master concepts seen in the comic book and so on.
> I would add female heroes, too.
> I would go with Stephen Baker's original concept where the game featured a modular board, though it would be something closer to DungeonQuest (only larger) than Advanced HeroQuest or Warhammer Quest.
> More dice.
> More cards--potions, equipment, etc.
> One monster card for each type of 1 BP monster, and one card for each of a type with more (3 fimir cards, 4 chaos warrior, etc) to stack BP pips on to easily track damage.
> Life and Mind point pips instead of character sheets.
> Gold Piece punch-outs.
> Every box would include a live and venomous snake of some manner.

I would do a 2 part rerelease.
First would be just as the original, but including everything for KK and RotWL. New resin furniture and mini's, adding female version heroes, but keeping the same feel as the classic. Board would be the same yet modular.
Second would be a new expansion. Taking advantage of the new modular board while adding a little more.
I would use the NA rules and spells, and basically everything else that was just said.
this is where I've been posting my painting progress so far:

I would be perfectly happy with all that above. :D A re-release rather than a remake, 25th anniversary would be perfect for another expansion only I think at this time. :) Female variant's i would be happy with. ;) Also in the style of the classics.
