Will Kickstarter 25th Anniv. Ed. lower MB HQ's price?

Postby Daedalus » November 15th, 2013, 3:09 pm

Someone on BGG posted in the HeroQuest 25th Anniversary Edition thread that original Hero Quest game prices will plummet on Ebay after the Kickstarter is launched on November 22nd. That would be a fantastic unintended consequence, but is it too good to be true?

I'll be an optimist and predict everything will drop a bit. Of course, the cost may steadily regain over the years, but I'm concerned with this year, and maybe a few years after. If things work out for Game Zone, they will continue to produce their standard edition. That should reduce some of the market for old HQ stuff as buyers divert funds to the new game. Of course, the game needs to be at least as good as the original to achieve this.

Nah, I doubt that would happen. Even if they are able to reprint the original quest pack(s), there will
still be a lot of nostalgia with the originals. I, for one, would rather have the old over the new any day.
I also highly doubt that the miniatures will be the same, which is what HQ is really about.

The only reason I could see people opting for the new version over the original is the furniture - did I
read somewhere that gamezone was going to make resin furniture? That would be completely awesome,
even if they are totally different furniture pieces. That makes the game hold up a whole lot better than
cardboard put-together furniture.

Honestly, I hope I am wrong. I'd love to jump on some low-cost original HQ stuff. I just don't see what it
would drop in price. Like any other game, new versions come out, and the older version become collectible.

It won't change a bit. Sellers will not sell for less, they will keep current prices. Would you sell valuable stuff cheaper, just because a new, modernizes and different version comes along? Not if the old one is still sought after. HQ original will always be in demand. Maybe the base set might drop a little for a while, but not for long and certainly not the expansions.

I agree. No changes.
Here's why: the 25th an.ed. will be too expensive for new players to come in and make a serious market share. Also, I still doubt the legal untouchability out of Spain.
We don't know how available it will be outside of Spain and I doubt it will be very successful.
As posted before, the game has to be very good, and then it's still too expensive for new fans.
And if only old fans buy it, there's the nostalgia factor.

Nothing that creates demand lowers the price of a former version. 4th Edition D&D caused the price of the 3.5 PHB to skyrocket to 300% cover-price.

Then keep an eye on the trademark deposited in the usa & cross the fingers ;)

About prices, it's an interesting subject since here we pay around 80 to 100€ one boardgame (descent, myth, zombicide, space hulk v3, super dungeon explore, mansions of madness etc)
There are some around 60€ (doom, dungeon quest)
it's around 45 to 50€ one expansion of a boardgame including postage & package.

Another interesting fact : you want to buy a game in british english from the usa, for instance let's say D&D Castle Ravenloft.
The price will be around 60€ including postage & package from a french retailer.

Buying idrectly from the usa costs less but if the douan catches your package, you pay the VAT (20%) on the total amount + 26€ more for the file fees ...
Dwarven Forge made an interesting offer in the usa with the new tile system kickstarter but it wasn't the case at all for the rest of the world due to vat and high postage fees.

So HeroQuest only time will answer to your question.
