HQ Custom Quest Survey

Postby Thrawn » April 15th, 2013, 1:10 pm

I've got about half a half dozen campaigns I could clean up now that I think I'm done with WAAAGH! I'm trying to prioritize and figure out what will have the most value to members here. I know there is a pretty wide range of experience and tastes, so I wanted to see if I could get a sense of where to best spend my limited HQ time.

Part I Basic Demographics

1) I have played HeroQuest (pick one):
A- 20+ years
B- 10+ years
C- 5+ years
D- 2-5 years
E- 1-2 years
F- Less than a year
G- I've never actually played

2) I play under the rules for (choose 1):
A - US
B - EU

2b) I have played the following (choose all that apply)
A - Warhammer Quest
B - Warhammer Fantasy Battles
C - Warhammer RPG
D - Advanced Hero's Quest
E - Dragonstrike
F - Other Role Playing Games
G - Other Fantasy Style Board Games (ie. Talisman, Dungeon)

3) I own miniatures/rules from the following (choose all that apply)
A - Warhammer Quest
B - Warhammer Fantasy Battles
C - Warhammer RPG
D - Advanced Hero's Quest
E - Dragonstrike

Part II Miniatures and Monsters:

4) Which of the following most describes your preference for minitures used in a quest:
A - I prefer quests only using minituares/creatures available in the original boxed set.
B - I prefer quests only using miniatures/creatures available in the full line of official HeroQuest miniatures.
C - I prefer quests using miniautures/creatures appropriate to the full Warhammer universe.
D - I prefer quests including whatever miniatures/monsters the writer deems appropriate.

5) I feel that the official monsters from HeroQuest (pick 1)
A - Are perfectly designed and shouldn't be changed.
B - Have flaws, but shouldn't be changed
C - Can be improved with small changes and special rules
D - Should be tossed aside and redone

6) For monster selection on a quest (choose all that are appropriate:
A - I don't mind seemingly random monsters appearing together on a quest
B - I like the monsters to be themed.
C - I like the storyline to tell me why types of monsters appear on a quest.
D - I like to have variations of similar monsters with different weapons and abilities.

Part III - Boards and Tiles

7) I prefer to use tiles and furniture (choose 1):
A) Only available in the base game (no custom rooms)
B) Only if it's available in official HQ expansions
C) If it's from HQ or similar game systems.
D) If it's available for download from this site.
E) Only if it's from official sets or included with the module.

8) My preference for custom tiles is (choose all appropriate):
A) Don't use them. Just use the board.
B) Using custom 2D layover tiles on the board is OK.
C) Using non-HQ boards and maps is OK.
D) Using more freeform maps without a grid is ok.
E) Using 3D terrain or dungeons is ok.

Special Rules:

9) The level of special rules I like to see in a quest (choose 1):
A - Is none. Leave them out and keep things as simple as possible.
B - Very limited. One special rule in a quest helps it stand apart.
C - Moderate - I like to incorporate a special rules on a quest.
D - Heavy - I like quests that bring in lots of special situations and rules.

10) For the game system, I'd like to include special rules for (choose all that apply):
A - Character Advancement
B - New Skills and abilities
C - New Magic System
D - Expanded shopping options for weapons, armor, and other items
E - New Hero Types
F - New Monster Types

Quests and Story:
11) I prefer custom quests to come as (choose 1):
A - Single Quests
B - Mini-campaigns of 3-6 quests telling a single story.
C - Full campaigns of 10 or more quests with a storyline.

12) My likes (Choose all that apply):
A - The storylines unfolding with quests are an important part of my HQ experience.
B - I like HQ to be connected to the Warhammer Universe (locations, monster races, etc)
C - I like HQ storylines connected to Warhammer storylines
D - I like to include puzzles to solve in quests
E - I like to include roleplaying and character interaction in HQ games.
F - It's important to me that a quest or quest pack tell me how difficult it is.

Re: HQ Custom Quest Survey

Part I Basic Demographics

1) I have played HeroQuest (pick one):
A- 20+ years
D- 2-5 years
I've had the game for 20+ years and played a little as a kid, but only started playing again about 3 or 4 years ago.

2) I play under the rules for (choose 1):
A - US

2) I have played the following (choose all that apply)
G - Other Fantasy Style Board Games (Dungeon & Dragons Adventure System Board Game: Castle Ravenloft, Wrath of Ashardalon)

3) I own miniatures/rules from the following (choose all that apply)
F - none of the above

Part II Miniatures and Monsters:

4) Which of the following most describes your preference for miniatures used in a quest:
B - I prefer quests only using miniatures/creatures available in the full line of official HeroQuest miniatures.
However, if the story is cool enough and requires new monsters, I don't mind trying to come up with appropriate miniatures.

5) I feel that the official monsters from HeroQuest (pick 1)
C - Can be improved with small changes and special rules

6) For monster selection on a quest (choose all that are appropriate):
A - I don't mind seemingly random monsters appearing together on a quest
B - I like the monsters to be themed.
C - I like the storyline to tell me why types of monsters appear on a quest.
D - I like to have variations of similar monsters with different weapons and abilities.
All these are fine. Monster selection doesn't affect me very much. If the story is pretty cool, I don't mind seeing Goblins and Skeletons in the same room together.

Part III - Boards and Tiles

7) I prefer to use tiles and furniture (choose 1):
E - Only if it's from official sets or included with the module.
Again, the story should be interesting enough to get me to print off a new tile and glue it to a piece of cardboard.

8) My preference for custom tiles is (choose all appropriate):
B - Using custom 2D layover tiles on the board is OK.
This is best.
C - Using non-HQ boards and maps is OK.
This is OK, but I may not actually play it. It seems like a lot of work to print off a new board and lay it on the HQ board.

Special Rules:

9) The level of special rules I like to see in a quest (choose 1):
C - Moderate - I like to incorporate a few special rules on a quest.

10) For the game system, I'd like to include special rules for (choose all that apply):
G - None. I'm trying to work on my own advancement system, so I'd rather see quests that not rely heavily on new stuff that may not fit in my new scheme (even if it's still only in my head at this point. ;) )

Quests and Story:

11) I prefer custom quests to come as (choose 1):
D - All of the above. Number of quests doesn't matter to me, as long as the quest and story are interesting. :)

12) My likes (Choose all that apply):
A - The storylines unfolding with quests are an important part of my HQ experience.
D - I like to include puzzles to solve in quests
F - It's important to me that a quest or quest pack tell me how difficult it is.
Not sure how point F could be accomplished, but I do like to know how difficult the author thinks the custom quest is. Or maybe where it fits in the HQ timeline. Not that it's official, but this is how I play.
Main System
Kellar's Keep
Return of the Witch Lord
Against the Ogre Horde
Wizards of Morcar/Zargon
The Mage of the Mirror
The Frozen Horror
The Dark Company (if I ever get this far ;) )

Re: HQ Custom Quest Survey

Postby The Road Warrior » April 15th, 2013, 3:39 pm

1) I have played HeroQuest (pick one):
A- 20+ years
I have owned HeroQuest since it very first came out, but only started playing again about 6 months ago.

2) I play under the rules for (choose 1):
B - EU
...but I'm adding some US rules like BP for monsters and Chaos Spells

2) I have played the following (choose all that apply)
None

3) I own miniatures/rules from the following (choose all that apply)
Not sure which warhammer option they fit into but I have a set of Vampire Counts Skeletons & also a set of LoTR Warriors of the Dead

Part II Miniatures and Monsters:

4) Which of the following most describes your preference for minitures used in a quest:
D - I prefer quests including whatever miniatures/monsters the writer deems appropriate.
If I want to play the quest I will find something suitable ;)

5) I feel that the official monsters from HeroQuest (pick 1)
C - Can be improved with small changes and special rules
This doesn't mean you shouldn't use the original monsters, but if you want a room full of lethal goblin assassins who roll 5 attack dice, then do it. Just make sure the story in the quest note justifies it

6) For monster selection on a quest (choose all that are appropriate:
B - I like the monsters to be themed.
C - I like the storyline to tell me why types of monsters appear on a quest.
D - I like to have variations of similar monsters with different weapons and abilities.
I would prefer use a skeleton or zombie with altered stats in a graveyard than use an Ogre just because he rolls the right number of combat dice.

Part III - Boards and Tiles

7) I prefer to use tiles and furniture (choose 1):
D) If it's available for download from this site.
If the quest is interesting enough, or even if the tile just looks useful, I will print it

8) My preference for custom tiles is (choose all appropriate):
B) Using custom 2D layover tiles on the board is OK.
I would prefer print a whole boards worth of individual tiles than a whole new board. I think it offers more options for reusing them

Special Rules:

9) The level of special rules I like to see in a quest (choose 1):
C - Moderate - I like to incorporate a special rules on a quest.
Each expansion added new rules, monsters, traps etc. to the game. Quests that do something similar can really stand out

10) For the game system, I'd like to include special rules for (choose all that apply):
B - New Skills and abilities
C - New Magic System
D - Expanded shopping options for weapons, armor, and other items
E - New Hero Types
F - New Monster Types
I think each player will alter the game system as they please to make the game more how they want it. If we are talking only about quest writing then really you have to accommodate this, not impose your own views on the game system. This only really rules out option A as the rest can be treated as special rules for that quest only.

Quests and Story:
11) I prefer custom quests to come as (choose 1):
A - Single Quests
B - Mini-campaigns of 3-6 quests telling a single story.
C - Full campaigns of 10 or more quests with a storyline.
All of the above. They all have their uses depending on who is available to play at the time

12) My likes (Choose all that apply):
A - The storylines unfolding with quests are an important part of my HQ experience.
D - I like to include puzzles to solve in quests
E - I like to include roleplaying and character interaction in HQ games.
B & C hold no interest for me. HQ is a fairly blank canvas, so why limit yourself to making your quests connected to Warhammer.
Of course there is a counter argument that Warhammer could be seen as a huge source of inspiration to be drawn upon. I guess I'm trying to say, I won't get upset if you use Warhammer if you don't get upset when I ignore it. Does that make sense?

A - Are perfectly designed and shouldn't be changed.

Re: HQ Custom Quest Survey

Postby Daedalus » April 15th, 2013, 11:33 pm

This is a great idea for a thread. Anybody making a series of Quests or a single Quest with the intent of sharing can benefit from the replies within. |_P
Part I Basic Demographics

1) I have played HeroQuest (pick one):
A- 20+ years
I've played a couple of years when the game was new, then occasionally, on and off, over the last 10 years or so.

2) I play under the rules for (choose 1):
A - US

2b) I have played the following (choose all that apply)
A - Warhammer Quest
B - Warhammer Fantasy Battles
D - Advanced Hero's Quest
E - Dragonstrike
Just the demo game at Gencon
F - Other Role Playing Games
G - Other Fantasy Style Board Games (ie. Talisman, Dungeon)
Ravenloft Boardgame, Descent 1st ed., Runebound, Talisman, Dungeon, Middle-Earth Quest, A Touch of Evil, Heroscape, Dark Tower, Battlemasters

3) I own miniatures/rules from the following (choose all that apply)
A - Warhammer Quest
B - Warhammer Fantasy Battles
D - Advanced Hero's Quest
PDF rules, fewer than half of the miniatures
E - Dragonstrike
PDF rules, fewer than half of the miniatures

Part II Miniatures and Monsters:

4) Which of the following most describes your preference for minitures used in a quest:
A - I prefer quests only using minituares/creatures available in the original boxed set.
Proxying certain expansion miniatures is tough. Maybe I'd be willing to print out paper minis, but I'm not sure how that would look on a board.

5) I feel that the official monsters from HeroQuest (pick 1)
B - Have flaws, but shouldn't be changed
C - Can be improved with small changes and special rules
I'd want a mix of standard monsters to keep things easy, but with some special rules for variety. The Spirit Riders and such simply changed some stats for flavor. The Fimir with the Rust spell or the doppleganger monster were also cool twists that went further than stat changes for surprise effect.

6) For monster selection on a quest (choose all that are appropriate):
B - I like the monsters to be themed.
C - I like the storyline to tell me why types of monsters appear on a quest.
D - I like to have variations of similar monsters with different weapons and abilities.
I'd prefere similar monsters with different equipment and abilities to be used occasionally.

Part III - Boards and Tiles

7) I prefer to use tiles and furniture (choose 1):
D) If it's available for download from this site.
I'd have gone with official sets or included with the module, but it might be difficult to get permission from an artist that no longer frequents the site. I wouldn't want to exclude such materials, but I'd still prefer for them to be linked to the Quest pack/Quest or included as an attachment.

8) My preference for custom tiles is (choose all appropriate):
B) Using custom 2D layover tiles on the board is OK.
C) Using non-HQ boards and maps is OK.
They would have to be available as downloads.
E) Using 3D terrain or dungeons is ok.
It would have to be simple, such as the pillars and trees in the Dungeons and Dragons Fantasy Boardgame (strait cuts are best), or the mirror wall in the Mage in the Mirror.

Special Rules:

9) The level of special rules I like to see in a quest (choose 1):
C - Moderate - I like to incorporate a special rules on a quest.
If they can fit in a half page of Quest notes, then that is good.

10) For the game system, I'd like to include special rules for (choose all that apply):
A - Character Advancement
B - New Skills and abilities
C - New Magic System
D - Expanded shopping options for weapons, armor, and other items
E - New Hero Types
F - New Monster Types
I'd say feature a number of them in each Quest/Quest series, like the published expansions. If you did more than one set of Quests, you'd be able to add on optional rules in each of your "expansions", only as they were needed. Is this your intent?

Quests and Story:
11) I prefer custom quests to come as (choose 1):
B - Mini-campaigns of 3-6 quests telling a single story.

12) My likes (Choose all that apply):
A - The storylines unfolding with quests are an important part of my HQ experience.
D - I like to include puzzles to solve in quests
E - I like to include roleplaying and character interaction in HQ games.
Maybe, the jury is still out. I'd want it brief, like in Dragon Strike.
F - It's important to me that a quest or quest pack tell me how difficult it is.[/quote]

Postby Goblin-King » April 16th, 2013, 6:06 am

1) I have played HeroQuest (pick one):
A- 20+ years

2) I play under the rules for (choose 1):
B - EU

2b) I have played the following (choose all that apply)
A - Warhammer Quest
B - Warhammer Fantasy Battles

3) I own miniatures/rules from the following (choose all that apply)
A - Warhammer Quest
B - Warhammer Fantasy Battles

4) Which of the following most describes your preference for minitures used in a quest:
A - I prefer quests only using minituares/creatures available in the original boxed set. + all official sources e.g. white dwarf

5) I feel that the official monsters from HeroQuest (pick 1)
B - Have flaws, but shouldn't be changed

6) For monster selection on a quest (choose all that are appropriate:
A - I don't mind seemingly random monsters appearing together on a quest
B - I like the monsters to be themed.
C - I like the storyline to tell me why types of monsters appear on a quest.
D - I like to have variations of similar monsters with different weapons and abilities.

I like variety in monsters. One quest is random, another is themed, another is differently armed orcs.
As long as it makes sense in the context of the specific quest.

7) I prefer to use tiles and furniture (choose 1):
B) Only if it's available in official HQ expansions

8) My preference for custom tiles is (choose all appropriate):
A) Don't use them. Just use the board.

9) The level of special rules I like to see in a quest (choose 1):
D - Heavy - I like quests that bring in lots of special situations and rules.
This is the one place I grant the GM unlimited power. As long as it's in the quest notes, everything's allowed!
The beauty of this is that the players don't have to bring anything. Just adapt as they go along.

10) For the game system, I'd like to include special rules for (choose all that apply):
F - New Monster Types
Should be used sparsely in my opinion. It's not a monster zoo. Suddenly meeting an unexpected monster is exciting. Meeting new monsters each quest is just confusing.
Remember the shapeshifter?

11) I prefer custom quests to come as (choose 1):
A - Single Quests
B - Mini-campaigns of 3-6 quests telling a single story.

I choose 2! What'cha ganna do bitch?

12) My likes (Choose all that apply):
A - The storylines unfolding with quests are an important part of my HQ experience.
D - I like to include puzzles to solve in quests
oh my god yes yes yes!
E - I like to include roleplaying and character interaction in HQ games.
Should be kept simple (yes/no kill/not kill situations). Not all players are good roleplayers!
F - It's important to me that a quest or quest pack tell me how difficult it is.
