Hidden Treasure

Postby drathe » March 6th, 2009, 10:56 pm

I've used this idea once before for a secret door (which was painfully annoying to the Heroes, but infinitely amusing to me. Which is why it was done.), but thought it would be great for treasure. Especially for Heroes who are reluctant to search for treasure because they keep getting Hazard!s and Wandering Monsters. Have treasures so well hidden, they aren't found by the first (or second) hero who searches for Treasure. When Heroes discover that good treasure can still be hidden after the first Hero collects a Treasure Card, they may be enticed to search more often. Which in turn will gain them more wealth, and Zargon more Wandering Monsters to play with on his turn.

Any reflections on this idea? I may (probably definitely) use it in future quests.

Sounds like a good idea to me, at least one worth trying.

Everyone in the group I played with at Phoenix's searched for treasure in almost every room regardless of hazards, so getting heroes to search more isn't really a problem. But the additional knowledge of possibly getting a better treasure would make every room get searched thoroughly by each hero I would imagine.

The problem I'm having right now with my current group is one that I've never come across before. The Barbarian won't search for treasure. Okay, Barbarian's loss. The Elf will rarely search because in the first quest, the Elf got only wandering monsters save for two hazards. Now the Elf is afraid to search. The Dwarf searches no matter what because the Dwarf just loves treasure. The Wizard has begun to search in every room now, and seems to only get the goods! So my Heroes aren't as well equipped at the moment as with past groups. Which might be a better thing now that I think of it. It'll give the game more challenge and thus more reward. They may not get most of the standard equipment until half-way through Kellar's. Which will give them something more to shoot for.

I may try it with some treasure in the main quest book though. Just to get a feel for the reactions.

One way around their fear: give them treasure!! When they search in a room that doesn't have any quest treasures listed, instead of making them draw from the deck (thereby making them gun-shy) give them 10 Gold or some such. Do this from time-to-time, just so they know it isn't completely futile to search and it should get them into the habit.

Note to Zargon:
Keep track of these little bits of gold they 'find'. When they do find a quest treasure amount of gold, you can deduct the advance that they already got. This way, you can somewhat maintain control of how much gold they're actually getting. If they luck out w/ the Treasure Deck, more power to them, but they won't be getting any extra out of the Quest Notes; capiche?

A most impressive suggestion. This is definitely one I will now use. Thanks!

note to self: when finding random caches of gold in our game, remember Phoenix will be ripping you off at some point down the road

Actually, I've never had to do that. I play with such a greedy lot, that it would be virtually pointless to do so. I was simply offering a temporary solution for drathe to encourage his player's.

Besides which, I actually want you guys to get advancements, if not for my own designs to play-test the additional rules, etc. If anything, I give you guys too much Gold. Perhaps I should change that?

Today's game was fantastic. Two players are totally set on searching for treasure (they are now going back through the quest before exiting and making sure they hit every room). One won't, or very rarely does searches. That's fine. The fearful Elf actually drew a good card and was not only surprised, but slightly encourage. I've yet to test your method as they played Prince Magus' Gold which has no quest treasure. I'm still going to try it out as it seems like a good idea to aid the squeamish until they are comfortable.

With all of your advancements, Phoenix, I think you give us just the right amount. You get just enough to keep you on track, but you don't have enough to buy "extra" stuff. Plus there is the whole condition where you might have a bad roll and lose out on the money you just spent.
