Yes, they are essentially the same, but we musn't feel obliged to adopt everything from WH to HQ.

Depends, they once have been the same, but since the world of Warhammer has been developed further into a different direction since the days of Heroquest, they are by now two different worlds.

No, the guys from Greed Workshop wanted it to be, but this was not the intention of MB, who own the game.

No, they are two different worlds, and that's that. Any similarities are due to the fact that the same people created the backgrounds and re-used some ideas.

They tried the opposite before.
Giving everybody the magic to blow up a little skirmish game to army sized games.

I think they are not consistent. Selling minis in myriad pieces to allow hundreds of positions is good. Expecting from a player to assemble 300 amd more of them is quite strange.
For the faceless masses there should have been a standard mini that needs no assembling.

Well. They didn't sell. Thats why they develop the storyline, finally.

One and the same. Milton Bradley developed the game in conjunction with Games Workshop, it was clearly always intended to be the Warhammer Old World, the designer Stephen Baker said as much and worked with both companies, the art and figures of that era are the exact same style and were used in both games; case in point the White Dwarf, the unofficial mascot of Warhammer fantasy is literally the dwarf from HeroQuest. The overlap is substantial in much of the material, despite Milton Bradley and Games Workshop eventually parting ways and some very minor contradictions or perceived omissions. Furthermore, the White Dwarf HQ published material and Advanced HeroQuest are HQ canon to me and clearly are in the Warhammer world removing all doubt.

To be honest, I'm not sure why anyone has a problem with that, some of the mental gymnastics required to deny it that I just read are amusing.
Games Workshop backlash perhaps? Understandable I suppose, we all know how They price gouged and ill treated their customer base for years and finally did away with the entire fantasy setting pissing a great many (including me) off to no end, especially when I have been collecting their stuff for decades. Still doesn't change the fact that I loved and still love the setting, the perfect almost generic fantasy trope Tolkienesque D&D type world for table/board gaming including HeroQuest gaming.

I get that some Dungeon Masters/ Game Masters want their own home game to be in a world of their own devising or modification, or a different setting all together, that is cool, but to make a claim that HQ isn't a part of Warhammer officially or was never meant to be by the game developers isn't tenable. :skull: :skull: :skull: no shields on defense roll there for sure.

Re: HeroQuest World

to recap is the world of HeroQuest the same world as Warhammer Fantasy?
Emphatically yes for all original HQ materials published.
:gargoyle: the plastic HQ gargoyle figure is clearly a chaos bloodthister demon
the plastic mercenaries in dark company, Barbarians quest and Advanced HeroQuest are the same as warhammer Empire soldiers
:elf: the elf figure and elves from the elf quest pack are the exact same style as the warhammer woodelf army builder standard plastic elves which are based on warhammer art
the plastic HQ dwarf :dwarf: is the White Dwarf mascot from Games Workshop and the painting it is based on is found many times throughout warhammer materials including on page 135 of the 3rd edition Warhammer fantasy battle rulebook
the orcs :orc: , goblins :goblin: , mummies :mummy: , :zombie: zombies, :skeleton: skeletons and ogres are the exact same style as then contemporary Warhammer figures based on warhammer art
HQ chaos warriors :chaoswarrior: are the exact same as warhammer chaos warriors (duh)
the HQ fimir are only found in the Warhammer world and are trademarked by Games Workshop, they feature prominently in the 3rd edition (same time as HQ development)and were only discontinued in the fluff in later editions
Skaven found in Advanced Heroquest and the quests in WhiteDwarf are the same as in warhammer
several references to locales such as Loren Forest and others were made in the Marvel HQ winter special, the HQ novels, the HQ stickerbook, and extra quests in WhiteDwarf
maps of the Warhammer world are found in the HQ stickerbook, the back of Return of the Witchlord Quest book (uk version), and all of the HQ novels
Morcar, Magnus, and the witchlord are found in Warhammer
unambiguously and with 100% certainty the Milton Bradley/Games Workshop games HeroQuest and BattleMasters share the Warhammer world.

HeroQuest was undoubtedly in the Warhammer Fantasy setting, until now that is...with the HasbroQuest rerelease of HQ (2020 Haslab crowd-fundraiser and 2021 release) and no involvement from GamesWorkshop, HQ will no longer officially be part of the Warhammer world. At least that version won't be, and that makes me sad.
Ironically GamesWorkshop ended the Fantasy setting with the Endtimes event much to fans dismay and developed the age of sigmar, a game system nearly universally panned, only recently announcing the return of the original Warhammer Fantasy setting to be released coincidently in 2021 although set in a slightly earlier age in the timeline

The first Warcraft game was almost a Warhammer game, and they are doing pretty good on their own ;)

There's no question that Hero Quest is based off of Warhammer; however, names of places and characters have changed, primarily due to Milton Bradley's ignorance and breaking the alliance with Games Workshop. Some things just weren't thought out or even considered, much like the location of the Ogre Horde, their base is nowhere near the Empire in Warhammer.

A map of Warhammer accompanies the Return of the Witch Lord expansion, which is supposed to take place in an abandoned city named Kalos, which cannot be found on said map.

There's also several locations meantioned in Frozen Horror that do not appear anywhere on a Warhammer map. Unlike Return of the Witch Lord, Frozen Horror was created in the US after the Games Workshop collaboration ended. At this point the North American expansions drifted away from the Warhammer conceptualization with the inception of things like the Frozen Horror and Polar Warbears. Ignoring all basis of location and fabricating names that do not exist in Warhammer we're forced to try and make sense of this for the sake of Hero Quest continuity. As unfortunate as it is, some areas in Warhammer need to renamed, others have to be thrown out completely. The games do indeed leave much unaccounted for, and without a precise map to go on, it's not wrong to use Warhammer to fill in the blanks. But as the HeroQuest world is only based off of Warhammer, any changes made in the game locations are susceptible to recording over preexisting places.

I'm not following your argument here.
There's no question that Hero Quest is based off of Warhammer
and
HeroQuest world is only based off of Warhammer
but then somehow isn't the Warhammer world later is like saying that early European explorer maps of the New World aren't really the Americas because many place names have changed, some just aren't found on the new maps or the old maps are slightly incorrect topographically or don't match exactly so they aren't really America but just based off of it. Nonsense.

HeroQuest was mostly designed and produced by Games Workshop (setting, monsters, stats, races, art style, etc. using their game world of Warhammer) and was then released by Milton Bradley, not the other way around. Milton Bradley only really designed the simplified board game style play rules for Warhammer IP products such as BattleMasters and HeroQuest, not their actual game world content.
The HeroQuest names that didn't get mentioned or mapped in Warhammer and vice versa are also irrelevant. I can name a dozen cities or persons mentioned in official Warhammer printed material that didn't get mapped or mentioned again in WH later or in a few cases even contradict other WH material.
Same goes for Dungeons & Dragons, nearly every printed D&D product introduces places, names and new monsters that perhaps never get mapped or mentioned in the campaign atlas or Monster Manual or wherever but none-the-less are official canon for the various D&D campaign settings because they were printed in official materials under that label.

The Ogre kingdoms of the later editions of Warhammer didn't exist in early editions of Warhammer during the time that HeroQuest was also developed and released; ogres were just mercenary units available to most Warhammer armies from some vague scarcely mentioned eastern tribal locale, until their history and geography was fleshed out years later with the Ogre Kingdoms Army books of the 6th (2000) and 8th Warhammer editions (2011). Against the Ogre Horde (1993) predates that material by many years so of course will be different.
New or even unique regional monsters in the Barbarian quest pack such as ice gremlins, Polar Warbears and the Frozen Horror not used elsewhere aren't a stretch or deal breaker either, every edition of Warhammer introduced new monsters or new units to the Warhammer world; especially one off regional campaigns such as Shadows over Albion: Dark Shadows Summer Campaign (2001, 6th Edition) with their Fenn Beasts. Albion had very little influence on the Warhammer world in general and wasn't really mentioned or further developed by later Warhammer products after that.

Even if your argument about differences and places not mentioned was valid and the two U.S. questbooks released Mage of the Mirror (Elf Quest Pack) and the Frozen Horror (Barbarian Quest Pack) "drifted away from Warhammer" as you put it, the basic math simply doesn't add up:
The vast majority of published canon HeroQuest material does reference Warhammer places. HQ basic game System + KK + ROTWL + ATOH + WOM + Dark Company + Adventure design + Marvel Winter Pack + 3 HQ novels + Sticker Album + published magazine quests far outnumber the two American quest packs (and the later HQ II Legasy of Sorasil video game which really isn't compatible) that you don't think really fit in the Warhammer World.

HeroQuest and the contemporary early versions of the Warhammer World were pretty early on in Games Workshop (real world) history and many more years of development and even retconning (changing from earlier versions) was done to the Warhammer Fantasy setting in both Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay and Warhammer Fantasy Battle game various editions, let alone other GW Warhammer related material such as HeroQuest, Advanced HeroQuest, BattleMasters, Mordheim, Mighty Empires, Warhammer Quest or Man-O-War or the countless novels all also "based off of [the] Warhammer" world as you put it.
Those Warhammer world maps on the Return of the Witchlord quest book (EUR and AUS version), the HeroQuest sticker album, and the HQ novels remove all doubt as to where HeroQuest takes place. The indisputable fact that Warhammer maps are on official HeroQuest products and therefore are canon proves without question as to which world HeroQuest takes part on. That is just the concrete facts, the circumstantial evidence that HeroQuest, Advanced heroQuest and Warhammer share the same world (Skaven, Fimir, art style, identical sets of races, Stephen Baker main game designer saying so and so forth) is pretty convincing as well.

At least until now. The upcoming Hasbro rerelease HeroQuest game system and quest expansions KK and ROTWL obviously have no ties to the GW Warhammer fantasy world (itself discontinued in the End Times storyline, but currently being reintroduced by Games Workshop as an upcoming release) as indicated by the removal of Fimir and Chaos warriors, and the obvious change of the Gargoyle's previous GW Bloodthirster style. We can then assume any GW Warhammer related content (at least the trademarked GW stuff such as names) found in the original Questbooks will be removed also (which actually is a significant amount, when you go line by line as it was based in the Warhammer world and mentions many places.)
That makes me wonder are they going to make it a generic setting or try to establish some alternate setting. I would think removing content by redaction but basically rereleasing the old material as it was otherwise would mean it will be a generic setting. To establish a new setting would change the original content too much from the original HeroQuest game by adding lots of new material and it wouldn't make sense as a "rerelease." They aren't promoting it as a "reboot" heading in a different direction in some other world or universe, but a rerelease.

The spelling variation between Morcar and Morkar shouldn't matter. Precision in orthography is a somewhat modern concept. Shakespeare used to spell his own name about 50 different ways.

Shakespeare was an imposter, as the actor barely knew how to spell much less write.

Take back what you said about the Bard!

Seriously though, I recently got my own copy of the 3rd edition core rulebook (1991 printing) of Warhammer Fantasy. Loosely based in the same world, lots of re-used artwork. It's the bed of inspiration but to me not essentially borrowing unless you want it to be. It's like the relationship of Kurosawa and Flash Gordon to Star Wars, or how many popular American shows were pastiches of different Japanese products.

Without GamesWorkShop, the new HeroQuest remake would never have happened, so for that they have my thanks, not just for the original collab!
