Back in September, Polygon.com interviewd Avalon Hill's project manager for the new HeroQuest, Patrick O'Rourke:

the Polygon interview wrote:O'Rourke said that, if all goes well, there will also be a version of the game available at retail in late 2021.

Wouldn't it be great if Hasbro's economy of scale brings down the price of the game? It feels like drawing from the Treasure deck.

I think we'll be lucky to see it hit retail, honestly. That's why I'm already thinking about a time in the future when neither the current nor reprint versions will be very widely available at a price one would reasonably want to pay to bring it to the table. Right now if you're a bit patient you can still get something complete and in reasonably good condition under $200. That might change completely when the Pulse release drops. If you need something for your original game, it won't get much cheaper than it is right now, so start watching and don't pull the trigger on the first you see unless you know it to be a fair price.

As I said elsewhere: If this gets a retail release, or even a release on the Pulse website, I do want it (and I want Hasbro to know that there's a demand for more), so they can have my money if they'll take it.

None of us here really do. Likely anyone here who bought the new set could say the same—we already have the game, and don't strictly need a new copy. But we'd like a new copy, and we'd like to support the company. Maaaybe there's a little buyer's remorse as people who've bought into the crowdfunding are realizing this is likely a very revised new edition, a reboot, stripped of the Warhammerish lore in kind of slipshod ways at times, that Hasbro probably doesn't actually care a whole lot about except that it might make a fast buck.

If they so much as give it a chance though, I intend to try and convince them that maybe they should care about it a bit. That's all.

Is that where I go around TexAverying stupid corporate executives? If so, I think there's potential in this new gaming system…

Re: Why did/didn't you back fundraiser for new HeroQuest? po

Postby Kurgan » December 5th, 2021, 1:43 pm

Short version: Not screwing up the core mechanics/lore + Stephen Baker proving he's still got it = backed it

I supported the remake (in the 11th hour) because of my perception that they were listening to fans and not going out of their way to ruin the franchise (as unfortunately many nostalgic IPs have been in past years when remade)... I pledged Mythic specifically because I was (like some others) curious about Stephen Baker's particular content contributions (which despite a few typos are shaping up to be quite satisfactory).

I don't regret ordering it, and I'm relieved that the game is coming to retail. That doesn't mean there aren't possibilities to stuff up future releases (the debacle over deliveries of the pledgers and the pre-order under-stock with relation to the Knight Hero which may or may not be the sole fault of Gamestop) still means I'll be watching with a critical eye.

There were some small quality issues with the dice. Others have reported issues with badly glued (or even broken) minis but mine were okay. There are some errors in the quest books, but other than one or two issues (the missing Spear for example... not everyone is looking online for fan sites that provide the fix) the main problems are for Zargon to sort out, not the hero players. An official errata is warranted at this point. The App is free and while not perfect seems to have been pretty decent so far (if only it were offered for desktops and not just smart devices).

Yes, I still think the dice should have had rounded corners (like in the trailers), and I think they could have easily printed an "Armory board" on that white cardboard piece in the bottom of the game system box. They still ought to make the extra Mythic tier figures available in retail at some point (if for no other reason than to undercut scalpers). The way they proposed to do the "Knight Hero" seemed promising (offer copies of it bundled with the game system but also as stand alone product).

Overall I am pleased with the remake (which is a surprise and change from how I felt a mere 14 months ago... when many of us feared this would be a digital-only or collector-only limited release like so many other hasbro pulse products). I held back a lot of my enthusiasm until the time I saw deadgamer's videos and the when I was able to do my own unboxing. Certainly Hasbro (and their licensed retailers) have an obligation to fulfill their pre/orders and issue refunds and/or replacements for those who got broken (or lost) pieces.

If it were up to me I would have had them somehow keep the GWS IP in there and distribute the classic localizations. But other than that (or a straight 1:1 reprint of the classic releases) this is pretty satisfactory. I hope they re-release all of the classic expansions and future expansions meet or exceed the quality of what came before and they continue to offer the majority of the content in retail for the masses.

I would have bought it. I would still buy a game card and quest book set.

It is unavailable here.

I'm happy HeroQuest is back (and with some new content), but didn't like at all the WoW-style art (instead of the awesome old Sword&Sorcery style) and the fact they didn't modernize the rules, specially the atrocious and outdated roll-to-move feature.
Also, I own the old game system and some expansions already, in good conditions.
Also, I customized my copy adding a lot of new heroes, spells and miniatures.
Also, It isn't available to my end-of-the-road country (even if it was, it would cost 4x more, including shipment and taxes).

Sorry to hear about German (home of "Die Claymore Saga" that title is BA). But I swore Brazil was on the list of countries it was shipping to... that didn't happen?
Major oversight. I would have assumed they were shipping at least to the countries that got the classic versions... (but wishful thinking on my part). :smack:
