Searching for traps may only be done on as many squares as the Hero has in mind points.

I really really like that.

Even though Beernut's game, Archetypes doesn't use them...
at Xmas my (now) 17 yr old cousin asked me if I had brought HQ with me! I was suprised and promised him that next time I would bring it! I will be sure to put that rule into the game!

As for me, undead:
Zombies = brainless - they attack the nearest target, switching to whoever is closest in LOS.
Skeletons = vicious - they will select a target and follow him relentlessly until he is dead.
Mummy = intelligent - they go for the most powerful enemy; sometimes they go for the one closest to death.
"I will raise your dead body as an undead skeleton. Then I will make it do unspeakable acts. Like taking a shower." - El Flesh.

We play with mostly basic rules. When a player dies they can immediately take heal potion in their possession. What I think makes our party different is we only have three players we have the Dwarf, Elf and Wizard. What we found is that with only three we stick together more, and that we play more like a swat team. The dwarf almost always opens the door, the wizard flanks him and can whack monsters with the staff and the elf can do the same with a longsword. It makes for a very methodical way to clear dungeons. With all four you loose maneuvering room and it encourages the party to split. Having three actually makes the game easier in my opinion, especially after you buy your first upgrade or two.
I really like the way traps are handle in the earlier post, and wandering monsters.

Elf flesh I like your undead creatures Artificial intelligence. I would have my goblins run when a big guy got taken down. Also because I paint warhammer minis I always get musicians. I would use musician monsters as alarm signalers and if the heroes didn't kill the musician on their turn the musician would sound an alarm and two or 3 monsters from another room would run in or I would reveal the contents of adjacent rooms and activate the monsters.

The thing is to not make every piece of furniture have something to loot or discover but often enough to be sure to be searched by one of the players.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

Quite a lot of rooms in the Quest books have a piece of furniture & nothing else. Seems a bit of a waste, so we recently started a new system for searching furniture. I made a little set of cards with nice things like healing potions for the searcher, but am going to add some nasties to the pack. Don't tell Puck. Once the furniture is searched, that's it for that room.

could implement a simple roll system if there's nothing special to a particular furniture:

1,2,3 = gold pieces equivalent (loose change)
4 = d6 healing
5 = d3 healing
6 = MONSTER strolls into the room, he needed some loose change for a donut on his coffee break.

It's funny how my 7 year old daughter came across my Heroquest in our basement closet. She begged me to play it one night so my wife (who played with me when growing up) helped her play all four heros. It safe to say I've created a Heroquest junky. It was the best night of playing board games ever. No we play every Sunday and my 4 year old daughter is my official dice roller. Thanks to the internet I've found a home for Heroquest junkies. Thank you!

Yeah, playing with the kid is the best version, too.
Writing houserules over and over and then playing back to the roots of 1990.
