I hadn't heard of this before and was able to find a pdf version of it (it looks like used copies are going for at least a hundred dollars). This is amazing and exactly the kind of general Warhammer primer I would have loved to have several years ago! Thank you for the suggestion!

That's about what I was thinking at first too, but I think there are some things like Lizardmen that weren't really fully fleshed out until several years later (that I'll probably be using as proxies if and when the Jungles of Delthrak manifests). Also, I've got a ton of the plastic monopose figures that I have based and used as additional monsters in my game as featured in things like the third edition of Talisman (1994) and Warhammer Quest (1995). It looks like a lot of those boxes came out between about 93 and 96. So I'm more than happy to use things from throughout the 90s as far as general races. But I'm also a lot more vague on lore and history and don't set my game in any particular year.

Back in ye olden days of Warhammer 3rd edition Lizardmen and larger Troglodytes had a page with stats and lore info but the Slann army was mostly Slann frog dudes of various kinds with some small auxiliary type lizardmen and Pygmies units, it wasn't until 5th edition WHFB that they reversed that completely making frog dudes extremely rare (only releasing one Slann frog character model in the next several editions but no units at all and losing the Cannibal Pygmies with the stereotype art altogether) and made Lizardmen the main units of the "Slann-no-more-now-its-the-Lizardman" army.

Kurgan get your hands on a copy of Warhammer Armies 3rd edition 1988 (or a PDF) if you can, in my opinion it is the most important 3rd edition book for HeroQuest enthusiasts looking for Warhammer races/unit types background ESPECIALLY because it covers Fimir Ally contingent units with stats. Plus Warhammer Armies 3rd edition has your HQ era lizardman fix if and when Jungles of Delthrak uses them. Plus you seem to like the Japanese version of HQ as well, WH armies has a Nippon Mercenary Contingent including Samurai and ninjas, the only official far east Warhammer Old World stuff released that I'm aware of. Not to mention it has a big variety of old world mercenaries that certainly covers all the HQ, AHQ and Talisman figures. You will get to see how weird Warhammer Fantasy was before they streamlined it in 4th edition and beyond.
yeah anything Citadel/Games Workshop made in the 80s' 90's figures-wise looks right at home in HeroQuest, too bad those GW Talisman figures are too expensive to have a bunch duplicates to paint. I always leave one game "as is" in the box.

The above quote is from SpookyHappyFun, not me, just saying.

The Eastern Imperial army doesn't really get involved in the Japanese HQ, as it's the heroes vs. Grimdead's minions, but for the larger lore, that's a cool suggestion.

oops my bad, trying to clean up the parts I wanted to comment on erased the quote text that indicated the post author and I didn't catch it. Oh well, good advice for anyone looking for the original HeroQuest origins/inspiration sources.
