Charging in first, being the meatshield, and defending my teammates, is something I really enjoy doing, for some reason - especially when said heroes often end up as leaders and tacticians of the party. Ironically, I am slightly more defensive than offensive, favouring sword and board tanks, but with the absence of any real tank in HQ, I'd go Barbarian every time.
When it comes to custom characters, I will often go with a Warrior/Knight that starts with a Shield as a fifth character, swapping three dice of attack for three dice of defence. It's worth noting that the sixth character I often include in HQ, for those times when I am running a 6 player game, is an Archer, which starts with a 2 die ranged attack (technically, a Shortbow). I will often allow these characters to replace the Dwarf and Elf, respectfully, if they are really in demand, turning HQ party composition into something more akin to AHQ or WHQ...
