I've never had a decimation on the Trial. I've lost the Wizard once, but every group who's gone through it with me has done so without a whole lot of trouble... I usually do remove the Chaos Warrior from Gulag's room though. But damn do I puty those who go against the two in the room with the empty chest....

My issues with the Trial are this:

-If you have less than 4 players, they die.

-If you have 4 or more it goes WAY too long: 3 hours for the very first quest is much too long, you want new players to want more and be hungry for a next quest and excited not dreading it.

-The fact that the players get to have literally one of everything in this quest sort of kills the anticipation for quests to follow.

-The gargoyle actually dies too quickly for a boss, they always say, "that's it?" after they've killed him and the 2 chaos warriors in that next room are the straw that break the camel's back that kills people off and is tougher than the gargoyle fight.

-There are no traps so it's not an accurate representation of the game. If you let them search for traps and there are none, they rightfully so get upset.

That's it! I'm making a new damn trial!!!

I wont through out the Trial all together, just play it later and make two changes
1. the quest description and lack of reward. I, personaly, think the quest description on this one is lame and the lack of a reward even more lame. how about something like "the merchant's guild is offering a reward of 350 gold for any who will bring them the head of Verag the Foul, a gargoyle who has been raiding thier caravans along Fellmarg's Pass. the gargoyle is belived to be hiding out in Fellmarg's Tomb."
2. add a trap. that's right, just one trap. instead of the there being two chaos wariors and an empty chest, it will be two status of chaos warriors and a trapped empty chest. if tresure is searched for before the trap is disarmed, the status come to life.

what i did was get an exra dec and wright "your search comes up emty handed" on a bunch of cards from the second deck. this way its not always something good or something bad. dice is a good idea too though, expecialy if you dont happen to have a spare treasure deck
Just say "No" to Chaos Magic.

Me and my group hadn't played for 7 years or so, and we cudn't remember all the rules so once we all got bak into it we remembered how 2 play and stuff.

I know ur starting with new people who havn't played. You cud start with some of the starter quests. That is wat we did. My uncle got them from this website.

Yes, I got them from this very site. http://www.yeoldeinn.com/downloads/ques ... r-pack.pdf

I started the new 6 Hero team on Carlos Starter quest pack of three quests, then moved on to The Maze.

With hindsight, I think that starting with The Maze as the first quest is the best as it is very easy, and gets you into the methods of actions, searching, fighting, very slowly and deliberately. Carlos quest pack after this then gives you a chance to rack up some gold. Then onto The Trial, which has never really bothered any of the groups i have played with, no one has died when i have played!! 8-)

However, my team did find the 2nd quest very hard as they unwittingly let a whole roomful of undead spawn in the centre roon without opening the door; when they did ge tthere, they found 13 zombies, 6 mummies, and 9 skeletons!! A lot of Heroes died that day!!! But i let them 'find' potions that bought them back to life, seeing it was only the starter quests!!! ;)

But on the maze how many zombies did u add, seeing as on the quest map it had less than half of wat u put on the board, enough to make the priest die and make the elf save him, by killing 3 mummies, 3 zombies and 3 skeletons.

The portal, the only hero that didn't die on that quest or before, The Elf.

Hey I am the Evil Wizard.....never question the evil game master Morcar or your fate will be the same as those zombies you slayed!!!!

It wasn't the maze, it was the 2nd quest in Carlos starter pack. I added just the amount it stated, 1 undead for every one of my turns!! You just waited like 30 turns before you found the room!! Not my fault!!!

In the first french edition of the rulebook, your players start ... into the central room : a arena where they fight each other until only one survives.
It is written so this is a good training.
I use to make them fight some monsters after to know their attack/defence / life pts stats.
Then they are ready to start a quest, the trial.

If you play with 6 Heroes, I have to add monsters! Simple as that!!

You have 50% more Heroes than the normal amount, so i add 50% more monsters!!! You don't want to go through a quest and not do anything, as all the other Heroes have killed everything. Next you'll complain that it was too easy!!!

Plus - I will add want i want within reason!!!! I am the GM, I am Morcar!!!
