This is not an official rule but I guess it makes sense.
I actually play by this rule. As well as treasure chests searching is different then room searching.
However I haven't quite adopted the whole furniture/additional search rule, unless the quest notes specify something is in the bookshelf or in a compartment on the table, etc.

The only argument I can make with this is Melar's Maze, NA edition, the chest in the room guarded by the skeletons, the quest notes specifically say here there is no other treasure in the room. The original rules in both NA and EU, allow each hero to search the room once. (No argument if you want to do the 1 search rule, I play that way too). But if your intention is that all unmarked chests are meant to be empty, then the treasure chests that are marked as such only negates the first hero's search for treasure? Many quest notes specify, The First hero to search for treasure finds...
It's fine if that's what you believe... I don't necessarily think that was the intention as these unmarked chests only appear in the 4 latter quest packs that were never playtested (With an exception for Lair of the Orc Warlord, NA edition, I think that was just a hiccup in conversion).
