I attended my 3rd Dungeons of Hope last weekend, giving some players a watered down taste of Frozen Horror (everyone knows it needs to be watered down). Ten players (2 groups of 5) got to try out my quest through mountainous icy terrain, frozen caverns, and cold waterfalls potentially sweeping heroes off the board.
I was told ahead of time that we'd only be using the 4 main heroes and the Cleric, but come to find out upon arrival they were allowing the Bard & Knight heroes too, so I didn't bring them, thinking they weren't allowed. Since I kept all my cards together I had their skill & spell cards, just not the minis. Come to find out, someone amongst the crew made up skill cards for the heroes we'd be using, so the original Knight skills and Bard spells weren't going to be used. Using skill cards that I didn't really know about made the heroes a little overpowered.
Upon meeting my first group, a pleasant chap dressed as Baron Samedi wanted to be the Monk. I had the cards but didn't bring the figurine as it wasn't allowed but I was willing to bend the rules, but the admins took issue with this as the players had score cards, collecting points for every kill, every successful spell and skill, etc. As the Monk wasn't exactly balanced compared to the other heroes. He had to settle for the Wizard.
Samedi's brother was dressed as Bat Man, no surprise he wanted to be the dark Knight, and even brought along his custom miniature of Bat Man.
Zapp Branigan was also at my table, playing the Dwarf. I voted for him in the costume contest.
Bat Man and the Cleric got left behind fighting a Polar Warbear while the rest of the group (Barbarian, Wizard & Dwarf) ventured ahead. The Wizard was the only one to get swept away by the Waterfall only to reach the ledge of the cliff. He ended up getting stuck an Abomination and Yeti, slipping past with Veil of Mist and putting the Yeti to sleep until the Barbarian found an alternate Ice Tunnel.to come to his rescue.
The Dwarf found the falling block trap in front of a doorway. This doorway was key to reaching the end of the quest, unless the heroes wanted to jump the chasm. Of course the Dwarf rolled a

on disarm and blocked up the doorway. Eventually Bat Man and the Cleric showed up, each with a Potion of Dexterity, allowing them a safe jump over the Chasm. The Dwarf got lucky on his roll and landed safely across while the Barbarian and Wizard found the Ice Bridge Spell Scroll upon defeating the Yeti.
The heroes arrived to find the Oracle, only to be attacked by the Frozen Horror, smashing through the wall like Cool Aid Man.
Time was running out as the heroes had 1:45 minutes to complete the quest and the fight with the Frozen Horror left the Barbarian and Knight rendered useless due to a Cloud of Dread. With 10 seconds left on the clock and the Frozen Horror down to 2BP, the Cleric rolls 2

s, and I failed to produce a

, a howl of cheer erupted from my table as the group high fives the Cleric, just in time for the buzzer!
They loved the quest and we very appreciative for all the fun they had.
My 2nd group somehow finished 10 minutes ahead of time with the same team except they used a Bard rather than a Wizard. But the Dwarf single handedly took out the Frozen Horror with Battle Axe using some skill card that doubled up his attack. The group wanted to steal a few more points by casting all their spells and skills on a group of goblins in the previous room without killing them. I though this was ridiculous, so as soon as my remain Goblin got free, he ran away. Having 10 movement I didn't think they'd catch him, but the Knight lucked out with rolling 11.
A little over $6000 was raised the homeless shelter, prizes were given away, some guy in a pirate costume won the costume contest, Stephen Baker didn't show up, and one of the crew members tried to do stand-up comedy that didn't land as he tried to get political.
There was a wholesome moment as a guy brought his crippled son in a wheelchair, who ranked in the top 5 and won a copy of First Light. My phone ran out of battery halfway through so I didn't get too many pictures. Overall it was a bit more lackluster over previous years.
