Frozen Horror and Mage of the Mirror are disastrous for new Heroes, unless Zargon intervenes to either give them more help or knock off some of the monsters/traps. "into the northlands" gives some suggestions, many more suggestions here and elsewhere on how to make these quests more fun to play.

IF you for example make the solo quests into group quests (or just run them with a group with no other changes... except increasing the end quest rewards) they are much improved in my humble opinion. Some prefer to rewrite them.

RoTWL and KK are designed for Heroes who have completed the original 14 quests. I think the rest of the expansions work fine when you have a group of "new" heroes in general. ROTDM final battle was much harder without the basic artifacts, but otherwise was my second favorite expansion next to ROTWL.

Hello Everyone,

I played Heroquest once or twice at a friends house in the 90s and always enjoyed playing it. With the drop in price last month I bought the updated 2021 version, and then subsequently bought all the expansions. I've had a blast playing the main quest with my friend group once a week (we myself as the GM) and my son and I have been playing the expansions with the APP. We just finished Jungle of Deththrak and are currently playing Rise of the Dread Moon. It's been beyond fun and I know I'll have some questions as I go.
My main question is which expansions are best played as a Group of New Heroes. I've found JoD and DofDM have been good for a new set of heroes. But have heard the original expansions, Kellar's Keep, Return of the Witch King, Frozen Horror, Mage in the Mirror should be used with a seasoned group of heroes. Is that true?
Anyway I'm happy to be part of this forum.
