Hero GM

Postby LauDividni » November 12th, 2019, 10:41 pm

Hello all!
I have been working on a passion-project, sparked by a re-discovery of Heroquest and an opportunity to share this classic game with my son. As you well know, Heroquest is such an adaptable and expandable game because of its elegant rule simplicity. Nowadays, it's also is a bit rough around the edges, so in order to share it with a modern audience, I thought it could use little more "oomph!" to keep up with the Fortnite and youtube generation. Cue: Hero GM!

Hero GM is a sound effects program, designed to work with any tabletop RPG, but is especially fitting to Heroquest. Hero GM, like Heroquest, is designed to be simple, fun, and dynamic! I know there are other sound apps out there, but I don't think there is anything else quite like HeroGM. It's a unique program and I am happy to share it with you all first!

Here's how it works:

Check out the full website here and there is a free download available to try it out! (Windows only for now)
http://www.herogmsound.com

Please let me know if you have any feedback or questions. It is also designed to work in a resizable window so that you can use it in conjunction with other music sources/programs.
Thanks! :redheart:

I have been hard at work porting the app onto mobile. It is now available on Android here!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nettlefilms.herogm

The original inspiration for Hero GM Advanced Soundboard lay in the sadly now defunct podcast, RPGGamerDad (https://rpggamerdad.wordpress.com/ ), where he featured really fun and imaginative play-throughs of HeroQuest with his young son. They featured fantastic sound effects, voice changing effects, and atmospheric sound. I think some, if not all, of those effects were added in post-production, but I wanted to play it live! Since then, I have used the open-endedness of Hero GM recreate this type of multimedia experience in sessions playing with my own son and family, and it has been glorious!

My sincere hope is that Hero GM helps bring a little magic to your table. If you give it a go, please let me know how it went!

Hi Azure, thanks for letting me know!
I just double checked the Windows download link and there's no issues that I see on my end. Are you referring to the Windows or Android version?
What part of the process did not work for you? Download? Install? Any details about your device?

I do know that Windows may complain that it is not an authorized app, but if you run it anyway, it should work.

To help clarify, the download link for the free Windows version is provided via email at the top of the main website, http://www.herogmsound.com . It is hosted on Dropbox.
The full Windows version is available here on Gumroad: https://gum.co/herogm

The android version is on the Google Play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nettlefilms.herogm

WOW !! Fantastic !
Absolutely magnificent !

Also here is a relevant question ;
Could somebody use it with TableTop Simulator ?

It's a software that lets you set up a ''D&D'' virtual table, so everybody hears you when you speak in the microphone, and everybody hears the music coming from the virtual soundboards that are put on the table.

Thank you!! :)
Yes, I am sure there is a way to use it as an audio input for TableTop Simulator / Roll20/ Discord, etc.
The basic idea is that your computer has multiple audio sources-- And by default, your microphone is just a single source. What you need to setup is a "stereo mix" and there are a couple different ways to deal with this, depending on your setup. Here's an illustration:

Hero GM Advanced Soundboard ---------------------\
\
Youtube or other source for music/ambience---------> --- Stereo Mix
/
Microphone input --------------------------------------/

Instead of using the microphone as a default input, you can use a Stereo Mix to basically send your computer's combined audio output as your "microphone".
Sometime in the future I will try to make my own tutorial to show how to set this up, but for now, here's one example:

Here is another great tutorial that I found, for those of you looking to integrate Hero GM with a microphone and other sound sources for online play (Discord / Roll 20 / Tabletop Simulator, etc.)
It uses a free app for Windows called Voice Meeter Banana: https://vb-audio.com/Voicemeeter/banana.htm
