There are good spells in the pile.
I think for me it is a case of 'one bad apple spoils the barrel', or maybe it's two...
Twist Wood
This spell causes any wooden weapon,
such as a staff, bow, or crossbow, to
become warped into uselessness.
Ok, so this makes sense as a counter to the Elven archers in the QP and it can also be used against Crossbowman that are sprinkled throughout the BQP. But really, is a spell so specifically designed to target such a small range of monsters a good idea? and also why does it mention the staff?
I think this one is bit fluffy and poorly thought out.
Flashback
By casting this spell, the spellcaster or
any one Hero the spellcaster chooses
can replay his entire turn. All results
of the Hero's first turn are cancelled.
You can cast this after any Hero's turn.
Casting this spell does not count as your
action for the turn.
Wow, this spell is so wrong it almost hurts to think it is official. I think the evil wizard succeeds more by the players fluffing their dice rolls or making poor decisions than anything else. To allow a player to get to the end of their turn, decide it didn't go too well and replay their whole turn from the beginning just feels like the designers sticking two fingers up to the EQP. But it gets worse because casting this spell doesn't even count as your action for the turn??? Why is this spell so special that it can be cast at anytime unlike any other spell. And then there are further bizarre questions that arise from this spell. Take this example from the p-b-p forum. A player died and another player used this spell (in the form of a spell scroll) to allow the dead player to retake their turn. So not only was the dead player allowed to completely replay their turn but the spell doubled up as a psuedo-elixir of life, resurrecting a dead Hero!!!
Finally, why are there 8 spells. Couldn't the designers narrow it down to 3 concisely written, thematic spells? You know, like all the other Hero spell sets?
Sorry for the rant, but you did ask.
