Ok so my monk player yesterday was trying to argue that the water styles do not count as actions and that you can activate another style when using tidal surge. I told him no. He really wanted to activate tidal surge with fire arguing that since he activated TS, fire was open. I told him no, TS last for your whole turn so technically it will not allow fire to be used until your next turn.

I think I'm right but I promised him to look into it just to confirm

All feedback is welcome. Thanks !

With an exception for Twisting Torrent, you can only activate 1 technique on your turn. Twisting Torrent can be activated whenever you take damage, so I would include that on a monster's turn. However Tidal Surge needs to be on his turn. This only unlocks the Fire Technique, which he can use on his next turn.

The great thing is that he has many chances to unlock fire again... so long as the monsters keep coming and he keeps at least one within sight!

I tried the Monk in AoH and I like very much, I equipped he with Ring of Fortitude and crossbow ( unfortunately I haven't the Shadow Cloak which is perfect for he/she)
The Elemental Styles are funny and useful, go forward and attack with Strenght of the Mountain or Eye of the Storm, then play Twisting Torrent in the Zargon turn if you take damage, then go back and regain the Elemental Styles or take risk and stay there, the next turn you can punish Monsters with Touch of Endless Inferno or Burning Spirit

Speak with the Stones is useful to found traps in a room full of Monsters

I never use Tidal Surge, Twisting Torrent is too precious

This hero is versatile, fun and different from anything else I've played before!

I ran the Monk through Mage of the Mirror with an Elf, Knight, Wizard & Wolf (yes, team of 5). With all the hectic fighting going on and the immense body points, it's very easy for the Monk to exhaust all his techniques and for monsters to still be left. So the Monk had many near deaths, saved by the Wizard's Healing Spells or potions of Healing.

But afterwards when I played Rise of the Dread Moon with the same group (Minus the Wolf, who died fighting Sinestra). He very rarely reached the Fire technique. I wasn't entirely sure how to handle it when dealing with Specters, so I just allowed it to do damage.

I used the Monk in 2 or3 quest packs, and I’ve never encountered a chance to be able to use any of the Fire elemental skills. Despite this the Monk is a wonderful character who can do almost anything. They are nice to use for disarming traps if there is no Dwarf available, since they can negate the damage if they fail. Give them a Crossbow and they become like a Warlock on drugs being able to attack with 3 dice in most cases, and has a reliable way to negate damage frequently. Strength of the Mountain and Speak with Stone see frequent use. In my FH run, the Monk with Snowshoes of Speed was an MVP in a number of quests.

Basically the Monk is a complete and viable character without the Fire Element skills. I think those skills were implemented poorly. Perhaps if the player were allowed to use the Fire Element whenever they want, but only once per quest. So you choose what fire skill you want at an opportune time, then discard the card afterwards. At least this way you could use it once per quest instead of never.

You actually can activate his fire techniques much more quickly if you don't stop for a search on every room and have another player open the next door, you can totally activate this technique.

Yeah if you used the Monk in the Frozen Horror and NEVER got to use his Fire Style, that to me is a tactical issue. The sheer quantity and strength of the monsters you encounter there (even more than MOTM) is ridiculous.

We got to use Fire a lot in Rise of the Dread Moon, and that was with a full party (sometimes even with 5 heroes), and while I'm known for my love of homebrew, I played the quests more or less as written, except when things were cleared out and too quiet.

I think my problem is I have been playing only on the companion app. I think you would need to have the Monk as the leader to actually have a chance to use it. A real Zargon can attack any hero in reach, and not just the hero with the highest spot on the totem pole. So I guess I could see Fire being more useful in actual group play. There is a reason I survived FH and MotM with minimal potion use, and no deaths. Its definitely easy mode on the app.

Maybe if the app randomly targeted heroes equal distance away instead of by party order would be better. I know there is the “Monsters attack weak” option which introduces its own slew of issues, though its possible those have been fixed. Even that is predicable as far as who is going to get attacked in a situation, so that can be exploited too.
